About Bridewell History Wall
Created for The Bridewell Museum, the function of this group is a drop off point for images.
We need your photos of Norwich; it's people; past or present, your relatives and ancestors, places that you love; your house, public buildings, your workplace or a public space you love. We also want 'things'; that curious sign down the road, a gas mask used in the blitz, an old Norwich brewery bottle, curios, almost anything you have a photograph of to do with Norwich.
The aim is to create a large one-off art installation in the newly refurbished Bridewell Museum in Norwich, It will comprise a mosaic of up to 15,000 images (that's our best guess at the moment!), hopefully spanning 180 plus years of photography, encompassing everything from Lantern slides to modern digital photography and video grabs. Drawn from various archives in the city and submitted to either this Flickr group, via social media, or through the forthcoming website.
All we ask is that the photos are your property and were either taken in Norwich or are of someone or something from Norwich, and that you will allow us the single use on this fascinating project. By submitting them to the group you will be confirming this is so.
Please don't worry this not in any way a "rights grab" we just want to include the real city in the project. The photos you submit remain yours and will only be used within the project. Full terms and conditions, in the least scary and most succinct way we can get them across, will be available shortly on the website.
So, if you've got a photo of great grandad outside his local, or taking pride in his uniform in 1917, or Grandma on her way to the shoe factory, Mum on her way "up city" or you in the park with the kids, we want them, If you have photos of buildings, people at work or play, we want those too, Black and white, sepia or colour, scanned or snapped.
Thanks for looking and hopefully thanks for getting involved. It's our city let's celebrate it!
The Bridewell Museum is undergoing a £1.5 million transformation, and will re-open in the Summer of 2012. A brand new accessible entrance has been created, and lifts to the upper floors have been installed. All the galleries have been re-fitted, and the building has been given a much needed dose of TLC. Previously a museum of trades and industry, the new Bridewell will now tell the story of Norwich and it's people.
The redevelopment has been made possible thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund, Norfolk County Council, Norwich City Council and the Friends of Norwich museums, and other local charitable organisations.
