21 Feb 09 - The term "Brass Monkeys" is used to indicate that the ambient air temperature is cold.
The origin of this phrase came from of the Napoleonic War, when ships of this time had an efficient method of storage and delivery of cannon balls called a "Monkey" Made of brass it was used to hold the balls. In very cold temperatures the brass would contract thus allowing the cannon balls to roll off the Monkey onto the gun deck. Hence the term "it is cold enough to freeze the balls off a Brass Monkey".

About Brass MonkeysSeeing as the winter of 2009 seems to have been one of the coldest for many years we're sure that many Flikr members will have had the opportunity to take some stunning pictures of snow, frost, ice or anything that looks cold. |
