Daniel Mosquin is a group administrator Daniel Mosquin says:

Hi all,

To help celebrate 2010's Int'l Year of Biodiversity (IYB), we've set up thematic months for educational programming at UBC Botanical Garden. We'd like that to spill over into BPotD as well, so to that end, here are the monthly themes and suggested tags if you want to make things really easy for us as we put together week-long series for each theme:

J: Resolutions for Biodiversity - iybjan
F: Biodiversity and Sports - iybfeb
M: Biodiversity and the North - iybmar
A: Urban Biodiversity - iybapr
M: Biodiversity & Botanical Gardens - iybmay
J: Biodiversity and Culture - iybjun
J: Biodiversity of the Pacific Northwest - iybjul
A: Biodiversity of China - iybaug
S: Tropical Biodiversity - iybsep
O: Biodiversity and Food -iyboct
N: Biodiversity and Health - iybnov
D: Biodiversity Inspirations - iybdec

Thanks for any help you can give!

And a few of these might need a bit more explanation:

For January, we're looking for successful plant conservation stories.

For April, we're looking for plants in urban environments, be it street plantings or plants thriving in urban settings.

For June, ah -- culturally significant plants from around the world. The catch here is that this particular theme needs to be done well in advance, as we'd like the BPotD entry also to be co-written in whatever culture's language, so we'll need time to find translators.

For December, anything from artistic renderings of plants to biomimicry.

Biodiversity and sports? I can think of a few botanical-derived sports tools (i.e. ash bats) but what specifically did you have in mind for Feb?

Ah, yes. Well, that's likely going to be the toughest of the lot. Certainly woods of various trees and shrubs for sports equipment. However, there's also rubber, plants used in sports medicine?, and fibres for netting and clothing.

I am giving a whole presentation on the topic next month, so I'll begin researching it in more detail very soon. Lindsay is already starting work on this.

We were talking about this at your (Daniel's) bio-diversity talk this week and one of your co-workers wondered if it might be habitats for something like sports fishing or hunting.

Ahhh, that's an interesting angle. I have enough hiking shots showing habitat, etc. and I tend to forget that hiking is considered a sport in a very expanded definition of the word.

I'd have to be pretty desperate to go to that length of defining those as sports, but I suppose we'll see!

Daniel - does the theme in general mean you want as much variation (of botanical life) as possible in a single picture...?

Biodiversity in the North:

Northern hemisphere? Or of the N. American continent?

As a New Yorker, I can't wait for the Urban Biodiversity month!
