About Boston Computer Society

The Boston Computer Society was founded in 1977. It grew to become the largest personal computer user organization in the world., with over 30,000 members in all 50 states and 40 countries. At its peak in the late 80's it supported more than 75 different user and special interest groups and held more than 150 monthly meetings. For many people, the BCS provided a first experience with computers; for others it was an important source of advanced technical information. The Society was influential in shaping the evolution of the computer industry, and it was often the place where major innovations were first unveiled to the public. During the 90's, however, many of the services that had been first introduced by the BCS (such as Dial Help, user group meetings, and computer shows) became widely available from many other sources. This caused an erosion in membership and a questioning of the role of the BCS in the fast changing personal computer industry.

In October of 1996, the BCS closed its doors, but the organization lives on in the form of the many BCS groups that continue to meet and carry on the work started by the Society.
