If you have a better image to offer, we'll be more than happy to put it up instead of Soda_O's one. Thanks!

So I broke down and bought the 85mm f/1.4 AF. A few days with it so far and I love it.

The 85mm f/1.4D Nikkor is one of my favorites. It's a great portrait lens, but I find it a good walkaround lens as well.

I've had mine less than a week but yep it's the most used lens this week and I've had it with me everyday since purchasing which is something new for me. Still getting to grips with it but here's a couple taken thus far both handheld in ambient light:

IMO, this is where the f/1.4D shines... These are the times the f/1.8 has issues... I think! :)

I have been going back and forth and now that I have seen this thread I think I'll be online looking seriously and purchasing... like TONIGHT!
I had the 1.8 and had not used it in awhile. Been favoring the 50mm 1.4 and the 17-55 2.8. This looks beautiful!

i just want to say you guys SUCK !!! just kidding, i want that lens so bad, and after looking at the beautiful bokeh of these photos, im even more jealous than before. keep up the great work guys, hopefully i'll be able to post here in a few months. the 85 1.8, which i own, cant hang with the 1.4, but these photos have a very similar bokeh as my 50mm 1.2ais.

Wow! Fantastic shots! Wow!
(I only have the 1.8/85 and I think that even this lens is great.)
??? Come on. How can a picture with a limited DoF not have "a bokeh"? Oh, well, we did not want to start a discussion, right? So forget it.

Wow, the shots on this page are frickin' amazing.
I've only started to get in to photography, so shouldn't even be looking at expensive lenses, but I've just ordered this lens for my new D300.
I actually ordered it before I came across this page, so I wasn't influenced by you lot :-P
As soon as I receive it and have had the chance to use it, I'll upload my pitiful efforts for y'all to scrutinise.

I don't know where I should post this question, so I'm doing it in the topic of one of the lenses...
Does anyone have access to the 50mm and 85mm f/1.8's and 1.4's who could upload a photo of the same subject, filling the same amount of the frame, so that we could compare the backgrounds of each one of them wide open?
I've got the 50mm f/1.8, was thinking of getting another lens for an even softer background for my portraits... I saw all the samples here in flickr and thought it might be a good place to ask.
Cheers!

by the way, to close one chapter.... every photo has depth of field. it can be shallow depth of field or very deep where everything is in focus. now, every picture with areas out of focus has bokeh, which simply describes certain properties of those areas and how the were rendered by the lens - it can be creamy, smooth or harsh.
by the way, i'm still thinking what would be a better choice if i went back with nikon, as the full frame sensor is available - AF or Ai-S version of 85mm? i'm still not sure. thank you for the great samples, though.
