The Nikkor 80-200mm 2.8 is my favorite lens for portraits. I have the old push/pull version.

"It is very sharp wide open, but I like to shoot it at F4"

I agree completely. This lens is amazingly sharp (even against primes) wide open but I love shooting it at F4.

Bokeh is very nice I agree! And sharp all over!
This was taken with the push and pull:

Now I have bought the Nikkor 105mm f2 DC, it is not currently under diskussion in this group. Maybe it could be started?

It is one of my best lens, great sports performance. Great bokeh. Reasonable price. I have the two ring "AF-D" version with tripod collar.

Can someone help me with this? I love bokeh like everyone else, but the backgrounds look fake. Shot with a Nikon 80-200 2.8D lens, manual focus, 250 sec @ f/3.2, 105mm, ISO 200, SB900 @ 1/8 power about 10 ft to the left of subject.

Long day

Well not f2.8 version - but even the more vintage nonAI 80-200/4.5 wide open can do the job....

Well, it is a zoom lense ofcourse and I am sure that your background bokeh will change considerably when you shoot at more that the shown half length.
On the other hand your motive stands crisp clear and still fairly well isolated from the background - That I suppose was the aim with you selection of motive - Nice shot....

I'm not sure I understand. I know if I shot at a zoom closer to 200, it would bring my background closer. Are you saying that bringing my background closer will not isolate the subject so much? And thank you for replying.
