About Blue Mountains Reptiles
Welcome to the Blue Mountains herpetology group. Herpetology is the branch of zoology concerned with the study of amphibians (including frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, and gymnophiona) and reptiles (including snakes, lizards, amphisbaenids, turtles, terrapins, tortoises, crocodilians, and the tuataras). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herpetology
Reptiles and amphibians of the Greater Blue Mountains area comprise two species of tortoise, 37 species of lizard, 19 species of snake and 29 species of frog (at last count).
A handy local guide for reptile identification is: "Reptiles of the Sydney Region" by Ken Griffiths also, "Fauna of the Blue Mountains" by Judy and Peter Smith 1990.
For positive identification, Reptiles and Amphibians of Australia by Harold Cogger is the standard work, if you don't have it - check your local public library.
A new up-to-date reference is: A Complete Guide to Reptiles of Australia 2nd ed. by Steve Wilson and Gerry Swan, New Holland Press 2008.
For frogs, I use: "Frogs of Australia, Green Guide" by Gerry Swan.
