01 Feb 12 - Hi Folks, here it is: the new group just for Blue Mountains Birds. This is the twig for all your bird images from the Greater Blue Mountains area. Images of birds taken elsewhere cannot roost here. I am really impressed with the quality of the images that other members have been posting. Cheers, Jack

About Blue Mountains Birds

A group for Birds of the Greater Blue Mountains of NSW, Australia. This World Heritage Area includes Wollemi Wilderness, Gardens of Stone, Blue Mountains, Grose Wilderness, Kanangra-Boyd, Yengo and Nattai Wilderness. Together they comprise a landscape of great natural beauty and biodiversity. According to Judy and Peter Smith, there are 235 native bird species recorded for the Blue Mountains. Let's see how many we can get for the group!

Members are welcome to post bird related news items and discussion; and to add common and scientific name tags to images where appropriate.

Images must be taken within the Blue Mountains. Please geotag and include description, location, common name, genus and species. Wild birds only, be they resident, migratory, vagrant, breeding or nomad, their nests and eggs.

If you need help to properly identify your bird, you should try consulting a bird book at your local public library branch or invest in a good bird guide for yourself - it's called lifelong learning. If you are serious about bird photography you will need a guide book.

There are also many online resources starting with : www.birdsaustralia.com.au/

Vintage images are welcome.
Videos are also welcome even though they are limited to 90 seconds, they will allow you to include bird song and more complex behaviours as well.

The two recommended local guides are:
Birds of the Blue Mountains by Margaret Baker and Robin Corringham.
Fauna of the Blue Mountains by Judy and Peter Smith.

And there are the usual larger, general, field guides to Australia Birds available from bookshops.

The Blue Mountains Bird Observers group organises regular walks and outings to local bird spots:. www.bmbirding.com.au/bmbo
