I think people need to understand what high-contrast really is. It's not a high-key image, where all the value are skewed to the white end of the range, nor a low-key shot where all of values are skewed to black and gray. High-contrast implies a small amount of gray tonality (middle tones) with the values being predominantly black and white.

@mfophotos - correct.
Just a gentle reminder, can we keep the images to "Small" size please?
Pez_Bridge has some great examples in his stream for those who are a little confused about the definitions.

Perhaps you'd like to critique what's been posted so far? Anybody else want to join the discussion?
While I like lots of th photos posted here, I DO have to admit that some miss the mark. As an addition to the above difinition, I'd like to add the following Table: Lighting Styles and Key:Fill Ratios
:- High Contrast, 5:1 ratio, 2 stop dif.
:- Dramatic, 4:1 ratio, 1 1/2 stop dif.
:- Std. Portrait, 3:1 ratio, 1 stop dif.
:- High Key, 2:1 ratio, 1/2 stop dif.
:- Flat Light, 1:1 ratio, 0 stop dif.
So taking in the other principle characteristic of High Contrast images, that is reduced/minimal mid-tones, into account a high contrast image should exhibit at least a 2 stop difference between light and dark areas.
Over to you.

I think the best way to clear this up is for tsc tempest to take what photos we have posted now and point out which ones are indeed high contrast and which ones are not.

I just want to say thanks to everyone who made a contribution. Some interesting shoot to look at and some interesting, though brief commentaries along the way. It's been an unexpected pleasure.
As an aside, is there anyone who'd like to have a go at picking a "top five" as the best representational images for this thread?
