Flickrmeet, March 25th : Stourbridge Glass Quarter and environs

view profile

Pete Lewis is a group administrator Pete Lewis  Pro User  says:

Hear ye, hear ye.

The second meet of the Black Country Flickrites will take place in and around Stourbridge, on Sunday 25th March.

Please be assured that all are welcome, regardless of equipment or perceived skill. We're really friendly, honest :-)

We will be walking a route around the Stourbridge area, passing through the town, but mainly aiming to take in lots of the old industrial sites along the canals and focusing on the old glassworks, for which Stourbridge is famous. Dudley Borough Council has a site with more info about the Glass Quarter here.

We will meet at 12 noon at Stourbridge Bus Station / Stourbridge Town Train Station (it's the same place), next to the underpass which leads to the town centre.

Detailed public transport options can be obtained here. Put simply, the following buses may be useful:

311 / 313 from Walsall / Dudley
9 from Birmingham / Halesowen
256 from Wolverhampton / Kingswinford

For those on one of the local train lines, get a ticket to Stourbridge Town. The train takes you to Stourbridge Junction, where you have to alight and take the quick shuttle train into town.

If you're thinking of driving, don't, as the public transport really is easy. But if you must, then the town centre has plenty of local parking. Just follow the P signs.

After a walk around taking lots of photos, we will pop into a pub or similar to warm up and possibly have a bite to eat.

Update: Following the discussion on this thread (below), the route will be a one-way trip, and we will take the bus back to town. This costs £1.40 each and you'll need the correct change. Alternatively, if you're coming to Stourbridge on the bus, it may be cheaper for you to buy a daysaver ticket.

The route which we will be taking will be (loosely based on) this:

The red arrows represent the main route, and the blue arrows are the bus route back. Unless I got it wrong (I'm colour blind), in which case I'm sure it's still relatively obvious.

If you're thinking of coming, please leave a note on this thread so that we can get an idea of numbers.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the 25th!

Furthermore, not having organised one of these meets before, I would appreciate a quick straw poll of those coming as to how they'd prefer the route to be organised (before I post one).

One of the issues that I think we will have to deal with from time to time in this kind of area is that many of the places are quite spread out. I walked (what I thought might be) quite a good potential route the other day, along the canal and taking in quite a few of the glassworks and stuff. Many of the more interesting things are further away from the town centre.

So, my question is would people prefer:

1. a meet more concentrated in one area (and therefore probably finishing earlier), but seeing fewer sights, or

2. a longer full-day-out-walk (of around 3 hours including regular stops), but taking in many more interesting things?

3. A third option is to have a one way route, which would allow us to get lots of stuff in, and then we'd all just jump on the bus back to town. This could work quite well if people are up for it. Extra cost - £1.40 each.

Thoughts most welcome...

A bus Daysaver works across the Black Country as well as the Midlands, right?

I'd be up for the third option. More stuff is good.

On the whole I think 2 hours is a reasonable time. Bear in mind we'll be moving a lot slower than if you're on your own. (I think last year we were averaging one mile an hour, if that!) But if areas are spread out then I guess we'll cover more distance by speeding up between them.

End of the day I'm happy to leave the route in your hands - surprise me.

Really looking forward to this!

Just be aware that the 'Glass Quarter' is a fair old jaunt from the meet point as it is actually located in Wordsley, i'd guess maybe 4 miles away.

You can of course make your way there along the canal from the Bonded Warehouse (just outside Stourbridge) which would probably offer more photographic opportunities, especially as it passes throught the back end of Amblecote where there used to be a lot of unused factories etc (my memory of this is based on about 15 years ago so it might have changed somewhat)

A route along the canal would probably be better advised and you could always make it a one way trip and end up in the Merry Hill Centre, this would take in the Nine Locks area of Brierley Hill which is also quite photogenic. This would be quite a long walk though and would probably take well over 3 hours at a normal pace.

I am usure at this point wether I will be able to make it but agree with Pete that all people are welcome as I was a first timer at the Walsall meet and enjoyed the day thoroughly.

Hi Steve, Pete,

Thanks for the comments. Yep, the route I have in mind would go past the Bonded Warehouse, along the canal and past all the old derelict glass factories towards the Glass Cone. Then we can make a judgment about whether to carry on walking up the canal to see all the locks (getting the bus back), walk back down through Amblecote to Stourbridge, or else just get the bus back from there.

The council set up some kind of "millenium walk" around that area taking in lots of the old glass sites and there still are signs pointing the odd thing out.

The Glass Quarter, as far as I'm aware is basically defined as (what they call) "the crystal mile" between Stourbridge and Wordsley. I think it's actually more like two miles, in fact. Also, I don't think getting as far as Wordsley is really on the cards - and also most of the glass-related attractions in Wordsley now appear to me to be museums and the like. These are interesting, but perhaps not fodder for a Flickrmeet...

Liking the idea of getting the bus back, dunno if that makes me lazy :)
Sounds like a good meet, thanks for organising this one Pete.

I'll sort out an upcoming event page for this too when I get home this evening.

I like the sound of the third option, getting the bus back, as Pete A. says, more is good. Only know the area vaguely, but what I remember I think is good meet fodder. I'll definately be up for this, and may be able to offer lifts from south west B'ham area, it's only a spit and a fart across Frankley and Clent for me.

I should be there. It's not an area I know at all, so I'll be guided by the experts as to the best routes. I am quite happy to make use of the bus, especially as Stourbridge is within the CENTRO area so my travel card will be valid...

Im in for this too - I dont know Stourbridge at all so this would be great. And I cant make a Birmingham meet until about May.

How frequent is the transport on Sundays from Birmingham - I might have to take the car just so I can justify being there as I need to be back at about 5.

If I do take the car people are welcome to get lifts from South Birmingham.

Great stuff...

The route is up!

As it seems that the general consensus is to take the longer one-way walk and get the bus back, I've posted a route which reflects this. Check the original post!

I'm afraid I can't make this now unfortunately. Would have been nice to be treking along my old stamping ground but other commitments mean I can't make it.

Have a good time all and i'm looking forward to seeing the images.

Wow, lots of interest in this meet!

Looks like I'm also going to be driving now... I'm coming from Harborne, so can offer lifts if people need them from around there, or else perhaps we could co-ordinate Ni if it's not too much out of your way?

Hey guys!

I'm new to this flickrmeet thing! But I would really like to join in the fun! I stumbled upon this thread from the Birmingham flickrgroup.

I'm from Malaysia and a full-time student in the Uni of Birmingham. I'm still not sure with my way around out of the city area. I'm wondering if I could meet up with somebody before heading towards Stourbridge? I have no idea where the heck it is!

I know this is kind of a last minute post. But I hope I could make it in time! I live in the university's accommodation, Hunter Court. Its right next to Edgbaston Cricket Ground. Any way I could get to Stourbridge?

btw...I just picked up photography not long ago. I only owned my own camera when I was 19. Which is quite sad with the fact that I'm 20 now.

Hope to meet some of you lots!

@Soo,

Hi :-)

I'm a student at Birmingham Uni too - welcome to the group.

I'm getting a lift with "A Knight Who Says Ni", but not sure if he has any more room in the car. Stourbridge is easy to get to on the bus though. The number 9 from Hagley Road or the city centre will take you directly to the meeting point in Stourbridge (it's the end of the line). You can't miss it.

Hope to see you there!

@Harri

sorry mate... no luck with public transport? Hope you get the car thing sorted...

The no 9 leaves Colmore Row (outside the Cathedral) at 10:50 and arrives at Stourbridge 11:39 - I intend to be on this Bus - the next one is 20 minutes later, so arrives at 11:59 - I will be on this bus if I miss the former!

According to the timetable it takes 6 minutes to get to Bakers Night Club on Broad St, and 7 minutes to get to Edgbaston Shopping Centre on Hagley Rd...
