Nice idea. But arrange it a couple of weekends in advance!

Yes.
What we do on the Angels of the North group is start a topic thread with a picture of a place, say the Angel, or a particular spot on a street and all go and take pictures there. This works for loners as well.
Shots of the bus station would be cool, and the market. And iconic Birmingham shots like the Rotunda. Actually, we could start that here.
And Andy? Please can you sort out the icon for this group, or get another admin, and they can do it? Ta. :)

I'd be up for this, too. I'm really in need of inspiration/motivation and this sounds like a perfect idea. Plus I haven't really explored the "new bits" of Brum, like Millennium Point, since I moved back here a couple of years ago, so it would be a good excuse.
(Oh and I'd need advance warning too - off on holiday tomorrow!)

Okay, that's three (four if bddd is in the area) - let's set a date.
Meet here:

(Junction of Curzon St and New Canal St, by Millennium Point)
Sunday 16th October, 2pm
Any takers?

Curzon St station designed by George Stephenson of the rocket, famed son of Newcastle. He designed and engineered the whole of the London to Birmingham railway, track, stations, hotels the lot. Also designed Newcastle Central Station and the High Level Bridge. There's a grasshopper beam engine loaned from Birmingham 'Science Museum' in the Stephenson manufactory up here, which is good because they haven't got anything else except the building and a few faded photographs.
Good choice. I will try and make it.

Is there a mail loop for these meetings/trips as I don't always have time to check for dates/places?

Folk can email me if they like and I'll send out reminders. peteashton * gmail.com
Personally I use the RSS feed for these discussions to keep on top of things.
Do spread the word though as I'm sure many Birmingham Flick types never check the discussions.

cheers, email for reminder is on the way. There is an LJ B'ham group with a couple of photographers so I shall let them know about this (unless they're already in the know).

Ooh yes, this doesn't have to be a Flickr-only thing by any means.
Out of interest, what's the URL of the LJ community?

sadly we're not that organised - there's a bunch of us that get together and meet in a pub in town. It was an offshoot of "LJ Meet" (we splintered when they started to charge for the service).

Hi,
I'm president of the Photographic Society at the University of Birmingham. We've got lots of members who are interested in wandering around taking photos, and who might be interested in random meets like this. If you decide a date, or hear of anything similar going on, give us a heads-up (photosoc AT bugs. bham .ac . uk).
BTW, I don't suppose anybody's a GeoBlogger, are they? I think it's a really cool idea, and one I'd like to get into at some point.
Cheers,
Jon

orangejon, it doesn't have to be as random as that. If you are running a theme, or something, please feel free to invite people in the Flickr group to join in.
Loads of people Geoblog, Jon. There is a group on Flickr for it, dead easy to follow.

Pete / Trav / any other relevant folks: there is a LJ community, bit sparse on the action front, at livejournal.com/users/brummies. Do pop in and promote if you feel like it.

The Curzon St Station has steps. I suggest we meet on those steps.

All being well I should be there - had another death in the family so I'll have to play this week by ear (so to speak). Is this a weekly happening now?

A long time ago (please don't ask just how long!) I came across a group who set out to take as many photos as possible of a particular page in the A-Z. Sometimes they did this alone, sometimes as a group, but the end results were then circulated - remember when prints were circulated around groups of people?
That could be a good way to set up a meet for flickr - it would involve those who couldn't make it on the day but still allow a real meet by those who were free.

Well, we had three people today, DIN1451, Sixball and myself, which constitutes a group so I'm happy. It's a start at least.
Started at the Curzon St Station and moseyed around, well, this area really for an hour or so taking many photos. It was good, I think.
(If anyone got there after 2.15 then apologies. Maybe I should have left my mobile number here or something.)
Anyway, my photos are in this set, the first 29 being from today.
While in the pub Sixball and I posited the Jewelry Quarter as a good place for the next trip, especially as neither of us have been there. Anyone want to chose a date and starting point? Or suggest somewhere else?

I got there at 2.20 and the amount of football fans made it difficult to pick out any camera-wielding flickrites!
Jewellery Quarter sounds good. Next time I'll try and be on time...
