About Bihar Floods 2008, India

Bihar is currently inundated by one of the worst ever floods in the recent history.

This group has been created to raise awareness of the current flood situations in Bihar, India and generate public support and raise funds for relief activities.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
APPEAL:
This is an URGENT APPEAL to join in providing support to the victims of this unprecedented disaster. The situation is grim and millions of people are affected by the devastation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

CURRENT SITUATION:
* The water level in the flooded areas has risen by two to three feet in several places as the river inundated fresh areas in Saharsa, Supaul, Araria and Madhepura - the worst-hit districts late Saturday night.
* Nearly 400,000 marooned people have been evacuated and about 150,000 people sheltered in 170 relief camps set up in the affected districts.
* People have lost faith in the state government and patience is running out.
* Over 200,000 cusecs water entered the state through the breached embankment of the Kosi river.
* The people who are rendered homeless in Bihar flood, are now facing a bigger challenge-that of survival.
* Food is priority despite Army efforts, lunch is served at three in the afternoon. Chaos looms as adults and children jostle for a morsel.
* Families living on the highway are still miles away from the relief camp, which means there's no escaping the cold fury of the flood waters. Just scraps of cloth and thin plastic sheets over their heads.
* Several relief camps have come up in the last two days but it's a drop in the ocean as thousands remain cut-off without food and shelter.
* Villagers are drinking floodwater to survive
* Relief supplies are grossly inadequate, food is scarce.
* The district administration is oblivious of the women's plight.
