Print Swap! (10/31-11/31)

Berin Loritsch [deleted] says:

It's been three months since the last time we even talked about a print swap. Is there any interest in doing a new one? They are a lot of fun, and it is rewarding knowing your art is being enjoyed by someone else.

[Details]
I set up the swap bot event (based on our last time). You can join anytime between now and 10/31. Because it is the holiday season in America, I'm giving all of November to get your prints out, so the due date for your prints is 11/31.

Join Swap-Bot
Password: photogram

[Rules]
The way it works is that we start up a print swap using Swap Bot. Everyone who is participating joins the swap. The details for doing that will be posted here.

Swap Bot will pick three random people for you to send a print to, and three different random people will have you as a swap partner. All you have to do is make the print and send it to the people you were assigned. You can choose any print that you want, the only rules are:

1) To keep things fair, print sizes are set at about 8x10 (A4 or 8" square are good, too). The idea is that you don't get a 5x7 when you sent of 16x20s. I've received a print as big as 11x11, but almost all have been 8x10.

2) Since this is a black and white group, all prints are black and white. They can be made digitally or traditionally, toned or straight black and white, on any paper you choose. Last time we did this, we had some people suggest separate swaps for digital prints and traditional prints so they can get "equal value". Unless we have a lot more participants, that won't be feasible.

3) Almost any content is good, but don't send something that may cause problems with someone's spouse. We've not had any artistic nudes sent (to my knowledge), but think of something that would be appropriate to display in a home with kids.

4) Don't sign up if you think you may not be able to follow through with it. We've had problems with almost every swap where people signed up to doing the swap and then didn't follow through. That means that while someone sent out three pictures they may have received only two, or only one. It's not fair to the other participants. We understand that stuff can come up that you didn't expect, but please let the swap coordinator know as soon as it happens.

5) Once the swap officially starts, you will have three to four weeks to finish the prints and send them off. You don't need to include mats with the prints, but do try to keep them stiff.

6) Once you receive your prints, you will be able to rate the people who sent them to you. The basic criteria is how good an experience you had.

If you know someone who was a bit dissappointed about missing the last one, be sure to spread the word. We want more than just three people involved.

Agreed. We've never had more than about a dozen people in a swap. It gets better the more people who are involved.

We've had international swapping in the past. This isn't a problem.

The swap-bot system randomly assigns swap partners, so what you get are names and addresses. You then send them the B&W print of your choosing (must be your own work)

No problem. You've done most of the footwork in the past, I figured it would be a good idea to share the fun.

International Shipping:
Please don't spend more than necessary on shipping. We are not in a rush, so first class mail or media rate mail is perfectly fine. International shipping prices can get high quick. If you think it is going to take a couple weeks, you might consider sending a quick note via FlickrMail or email that the package is coming.

On the first swap, I had a couple swap partners in Europe. I was going to send priority mail until I found out that it was going to cost more than $20 USD. First class mail was just a couple dollars, and they received their prints about a week and a half later.

Is it possible to see your swap partners on the swap-bot webpage? Because I can't see 'em! Also, the 'Dashboard' feature has me down as not being in any current swaps.
Posted 43 months ago. (permalink)

Berin Loritsch [deleted] says:

You can only see the people you are sending to, the only person who can see who is sending to you is the swap administrator. The anonymity is part of what makes this fun and fair.

The dashboard shows what are the current swaps by default. You will find the older swaps under "sent" or "archived".

I don't see you as having signed up for this swap. You are using "biopot" as your username right? Send me a flickr mail or use the "contact" feature on swap-bot to see if we can clear this up.

:) The deadline to have them in the mail is the end of the month, so take your time. It's supposed to be fun. My enlarger is waiting for me to get paid so I can get a new bulb for it. I won't even be able to start until it arrives early to mid next week.

So far we have only one person who is marked as having sent their pictures, how are we all doing? We are just about half way through the month, so I just wanted to remind everyone there's only 16 more days left.

If you've sent your pictures already, mark them sent in swap bot. If you've received your pictures, be sure to leave feedback! It's all part of what makes this fun.

It is a busy time of year. I just got two of my prints done, and I have a third from a contest I entered. I'll get mine out some time this week.

For our USA folks, this Thursday is Thanksgiving--it will be difficult to hide from the family, or make prints in a tryptophan induced haze. Plan accordingly, and most of all, spend time with your family!

Has anyone received prints yet?
