I'm in! When will it go up on the swap-bot page?
Also, if anybody here feels like writing a "inkjet printing 101" guide somewhere that would be nice. I had to figure my Epson ip4300 for the first time last time around and while I don't think the results were awful, I wouldn't mind getting some tips about figuring out how to calibrate the tones, etc.

I'm in, this time with silver prints.
Hmm. Calibrating tones... I've not done that, but to truly calibrate your machine, you need to spend a few bucks for a screen calibrator and a print calibrator. Add to that an IT-8 target to calibrate the scanner... Although if the screen and printer are calibrated that's not as important.

Rules please?
Minimal print size and how many swap partners?
Posted 23 months ago.

Rules... We don't really have a lot of rules. But if you sign up, please follow through. I had some real headaches last time with people not sending prints. (And if you didn't get one last time, remind me, I'll try to make it up to you this round.)
Signup ends at the end of February. You will then get three randomly selected names/addresses from the list of those who have signed up. You make and send prints to them by March 15th. (You will also receive three prints). Swap-bot allows us to manage this nicely and lets me know who and when prints have been sent. It also does the partner picking.
Prints can be wet, inkjet, lightjet, toned, etc. Nominally we're looking for 8x10s, but that's just a guide. 8x10 is a common US format that may not be common in other countries. Just use common sense. The idea is to make sure you're not sending billboards and receiving wallets. And 8x10s are pretty easy to mail.
If that didn't answer your questions, please let me know. The swap is a lot of fun and I'd really like to see more participants.

I like to look at people's streams and favorites before I pick a photo to send... my habits are sort of eclectic, so I try to figure out what they might like from what I've got. I had one person offer to let me choose a set on flickr and then they chose the specific image, which was nice but obviously not required.

This has probably been covered but I missed it:
Not sure what the rules are but I would be willing to play provided it was like for like. I do gelatin silver fiber prints and would trade for the same but as much as I admire digital, I don't want to trade a fiber for a digi.
Is that fair? And if so what do I do?
I assume I choose the print I send?
(Also all my prints are contact so there's no option on size, they're small, but I consider that one of their most significant charms.)

The thing with swap bot is that the trades are all random. If for example you had Luke, Mike, and RDHDDPoison as people you send to, you might get a print from Kelley Girl, s5hiara, and me. We all use different processes.
I'm doing silver prints this time, but I'm unsure if I'm going to do fiber or RC. I haven't done fiber before. Finding a place I can wash for 45-90 minutes is the tough part.
To answer your questions in order:
Is that fair? What you want is fair, but just not possible with the way the print swap is set up.
If so what do I do? If you want to join in anyway, go to the swap bot page and join the swap. We try to keep the sizes about 8x10 so that you aren't sending 16x20s and getting 4x5s. That said, I've seen your work and I wouldn't complain receiving a 4x5 print you've made.
I assume I choose the print I send? Absolutely. The swap partners are chosen randomly, so there really isn't a way for people to request a picture from you.
----
I wonder if we may want to do separate themed swaps in the future. For example, a silver print swap going on at the same time as a digi print swap. That way everyone is on a level playing field. I usually end up getting at least one wet print.

The last time around I think I got two digital prints (one was a digital print of a b&w film scan) and one wet print. I sent out three wet prints, but mine were done on RC paper since I'm not really set up to do fiber in a way that I'd be proud to give to others, haha.

Mine will be 10x8 on glossy Ilford Multigrade IV RC paper. I do have some fibre paper, but it's stuff I got second hand (old, lots of fog, and also single-weight). Good for experimentation only :-)
I don't mind what I receive BTW - as long as the sender is happy that the image is a good one... ;-)
I'll be sending out pictures that aren't on Flickr BTW :-D

I think the idea is to send others something you would be proud to hang in your home. If it's got your name and signature, it should be something you're proud of and that means taking pride in processing, too.
Am I right?
Also, swapbot is only reflecting that three people signed up. Is that correct?

No, that's the number of people to whom you'll be sending (and receiving) prints. There are currently 11 people signed up.

I'm a hobbyist, digital only, without any experience with fancy or lab printers. The only "value" (if any) in what I'll be sending is in the sentiment of the image captured. Tell ya what, I'll include good mats and (hopefully) some good paper.
But a question - how do you guys sign your stuff? On the border? Digital watermark? other? I really have no experience with this.

Kelley: Yes, I think so. I think it is enjoyable to share my work with others, but also to appreciate what other amateurs, that is, people who do this for the love of it, are doing.
Nancy: I generally don't mat anything in a print swap. I've not received anything matted either. Probably an expense you don't need to incur.
I'll sign a print on a border that I leave on it, or I'll trim it borderless and mount it, signing the mount just under the print. But that's just me.

I have my prints ready, and just need to get the names/addresses. I'm motivated because my son has a tournament which will conflict with the swap time. They are traditionally made RC prints (plastic coated) using the last of my RC paper. I'm going fiber-based, but I lacked the confidence to do it for this swap.

I'm not sure if I'll do RC or Fiber as I still have a bunch of RC stock. I haven't picked images yet. I can say, though, fiber's definitely the way to go. A bit more processing involved with the washing, etc., but worth it to me.
(Note to Berin: Fiber matte paper is REALLY matte. Try glossy first if you can.)
Stuart (biopot): Inkjets are fine. A lot of people here are darkroom freaks, but we all know that's not the only way to make prints.

Cheers Mike, I must admit, I do feel slightly 'intimidated' and possibly a bit of a charlatan shooting in colour and making the necessary changes. When I used to print and develop there was a much greater sense of creation, of actually making something happen. maybe one day...

Don't feel intimidated. Making a print is a sort of personal expression. I've received some very nice inkjet prints in the past. So long as it works for you, that's what counts IMHO.
Fortunately we have options these days. Options that didn't exist not too long ago. Then we all pretty much had to do the same thing to make prints. I think with more options in output you get more freedom for creative expression. One can get too tied up in the trivial details of the mechanics of printing and not see the print. I hope we don't do that here.

Biopot, I think you sent me one last print swap. I have to say it looks much better in black and white. It came out very nice. At the end of the day, the print swap is more about the art and less about how we achieved it. I like to send a note about the creative process along with the print. The last couple print swaps I participated in were inkjet prints, made from my Epson R220. Not archival, but not going to disappear in a week either.
[Edit] Every print I've received I have mounted and displayed in my house. They are all beautiful in their own way (and thankfully G rated).
Note to Mike: Oriental doesn't make a matte fiber base, and I've been using their papers. I already have the paper, it's just a question of setting up the extended washing process. Oriental's matte RC paper is very nice to work with, but once I use it up I won't be buying any more. Glossy prints seem to work better in the darkroom.

it's just a question of setting up the extended washing process.
A few minutes in hypo-clear helps a lot. Then I soak them in a sink (changing the warm water every ten minutes or so) for an hour or two.

I managed to do mine last night - revisiting an old neg (November 2006) which I'd never actually printed before. I found it extremely difficult to choose what to print (everyone's getting the same print from me), but I was pleased that the neg printed without any problems - once I'd sorted out exposure/grade I didn't need to do any dodging/burning...
... By the way - Thanks for the print-map Berin - interesting to see what you had to go through to get the print!
I'm off work today (stinking cold) but I will try and get the prints packaged up and my wife to send them out ;-)

Namke, I did the same thing (sending the same print to all three people). Now I have to make one for myself. I'm always interested in the process of how a print comes to life--so I assume others are as well. The negative I chose was not too old, May 2007. I have a few tools to help me not make the same exposure mistakes I did last time.
For those of you using ink jet to print, don't be intimidated by all the darkroom shop talk. I've received some very nice ink jet prints that are hanging on my wall right now.

I figured the easiest way for me to chose was to pick three recent photos. That way I am forced to print some of my work I have not printed, and I get a chance to see it on paper.
One of my prints was a 1.5 minute exposure in terms of the enlarger at f8. It required progressive burning from the top of the print to the bottom. I love orchestrating that, and when I got it right, I made three copies. That moment in history when I had the info straight in my brain is now gone ;-) I'll have to redo it later if I want the same results since I dont' really keep notes or anything.

Mine were sent yesterday; one to the UK and two across the pond. I printed inkjets, as I am still working on getting a darkroom setup here. The paper I planned to use did not appeal to me, so I ended up using some Moab samples (which I love but cannot get locally in the UK), which unfortunately have identifying stickers applied to the back of the print. Too bad Moab isn't paying me to advertise for them!

The print swaps give me added motivation to get down in the basement and print some of my more recent works too, so I like that about them. That print had to be square rather than cropped to 8x10, so I hope that's OK with you ;-)

I do have to say I am torn about square formats. I love the format, but finding frames is very difficult. I bought a mat cutter to deal with the (now) abnormal shape, but finding one-off mats without ordering a whole bunch is not easy either. Easy to love, hard to frame.
I have a few pictures that just have to be square as well.

I, too, like square format prints. I like square format cameras too. Framing them is definitely more expensive though.
I just sent a bunch of prints to the local gallery (where I will start selling as of Saturday), a few of them square. It cost me 28% more to frame the square images (that is, 14x14 matted size, as opposed to the 14x18 ones). I think that's because it goes in as a custom job. I can't recover that cost in the final price either.
Still, I think that the uniqueness of the square prints sets them apart and I'll continue to make them regardless.

You can get 8x8 frames at walmart or target for the same price as 8x10 frames.
However, that means no matting around the edges.

I just got a square print from Mike today and it's SO great, definitely worth finding the right frame. :)
But, since I've been remiss and hadn't gotten my prints together (now taken care of) Berin will be getting a 8x10 print that I found in my old darkroom prints. I wish my square photos could be darkroom ones - Mike's print is certainly inspiring - but without the equipment that just can't happen.
