04 Aug 09 - Hello, Better Web Pics learners. Check out my recent article about using a camera to stalk small game. Many of the pointers have more to do with understanding animals than they do photography.

About Better Web Pics

better_web_pics_icon

A learning-through-practice group for those who take photographs for websites. Members will share tips about basic photographic skills, and resources and techniques for preparing better web pics.

So, why have a special group for preparing photos for the Web? What's different about Web pics?

Size for one thing. Most people, when they make photographic prints, go for at least 5x7 inches. But even the smaller wallet size is bigger than a good many Web pics. The average width of a Web browser window is 800 pixels. For a photo to be loaded in a reasonable amount of time it should be no wider than half that amount: 400 pixels. We're talking pretty small! So, if you're going to do a good job with Web pics you have to learn what can be done well in a small area. Group photos don't show well. Neither do pictures with a lot of small details. What you want are closeup shots with high contrast and simple design. A picture that tells a story is tops!

Secondly, color is different in Web pics. All the color comes from within, rather than by reflection, as on a printed page. High contrast and well saturated color are good for Web pics.

Thirdly, Web pics are so AVAILABLE! They get much more circulation than prints do. This can be hugely advantageous, but also dangerous! You'd better be savvy about the security of sharing Web pics if you want to avoid trouble for yourself or others.

Finally, Web pics can be complicated to process. You have to know how to dress them so they look their best, how to size them for the use you intend, how to send them over the Internet, how to download them from the Internet.

Better Web Pics is for learning all these things, and probably more! The Admin has invited several of his Flickr contacts to join the group as fellow-learners and advisors. (This is a good place for me to thank my Flickr friend, Jeff Holbrook (http://flickr.com/photos/vc_vigilant/) for his splendid photo of the droplet and spider web which Better Web Pics uses for its thumbnail graphic).

Better Web Pics is a collegial learning group. Don't be worried about making mistakes. And when you offer advice to a fellow-learner, please do it with humility and respect.

Welcome to Better Web Pics!
