Embarrassed by Bento Lunches?

view profile

Jenny323 says:

I know it's silly, but sometimes I feel embarrassed by my bento lunches in an office where frozen microwave meals or going out for lunch are the norm. I tend to eat at my desk and people often stop by and ask about my lunch. I know some of them find it a bit odd.

Does anyone else feel this way?

No. Sometimes I force co-workers to look at my lunch! I've only eaten from my Laptop Lunchbox in public twice, on Amtrak trains going to visit my mother. I saw a couple of people looking my way but it didn't bother me, especially when I saw lines of people coming back from the cafe car with boxes of chips, soda and frozen, pre-formed burgers. Besides paying a lot for really gross food, they also had to cram themselves into the cafe car and wait a long time to get that stuff. I just had to pull my box out of my bag.

I've feel the same sometimes - one particular coworker can't fathom why anyone would bring lunch. I've pointed out the health and financial reasons (although I didn't mention how much I've spent on bento accessories!)

It kind of goes with an earlier topic I posted about -- being stared at for rinsing out the box after lunch.

Maybe I should start bringing in bentos for everyone!

Actually I am proud of my bentos. I originally started bringing chopsticks to work because people will steal utensils but they never steal chopsticks. I find people are interested in how to use them and they are fascinated by the lunch itself and always comment on how they wish they could do it themselves and had the time. I am sure they always thought I was wierd anyway lol. It is always a conversation starter and I made friends with more co workers that way. Now I dont work but I make bento for my kid and the other mothers think they are cool.

I eat around lots of people who get take-out or microwave frozen meals. But there are also a lot who bring in their own lunch, and I find some of them somewhat elaborate. I have a lot of Hispanic coworkers and they often bring tasty looking lunches with little containers of salsa and salad. This probably explains why people don't question me about my lunches.

Although, I do get stares every so often. Some people will even pause, or do a double-take and "nonchalantly" look at my food. But I think it is mainly because I am Caucasian eating Japanese food out of an elaborate container with chopsticks. It's odd. Plus, I tend to read books while eating (which can be quite difficult with chopsticks).

Yes, at times... and even more in the beginning stages. My co-workers are a bunch of curious cats and my bento got scrutinised everyday when I initially started bringing them to the office. I was "requested" to offer previews of my bentos in the mornings with fingers poking ang pointing, and questions of what's what and all.

People usually roll their eyes and ask if I ever slept and where do I find the time to make all the food and cutsie stuff. I even received a request for my bento pictures so they can show their friends what a "weirdo" they had in the office (apparently my office bento tales got carried way further than i imagined).

But with time, the novelty dies out and they have somewhat gotten used to it. I get a lot lesser stares and embarassment now but I still get them from time to time.

I have kind of a superior demeanor, so I look down a bit on the poor wretches who are eating those supermarket frozen entrees, fast "food," etc. I frankly can't understand why people eat that stuff.

Some of my co-workers wish that I did not *always* bring my lunch, so that I could go out (they don't *all* think that I am a biatch, lol).

But I usually eat at my desk, to keep from having to explain my lunch, or talk to people I don't want to talk to. I just get tired of people freaking out at the quail eggs, fish cakes and the seaweed, while they eat sandwiches made of mystery meat on that spongy white stuff they call bread.

Nope...I proudly show them off to anyone wanting to see. And if anyone asks, I'll tell them more!

In my office, we have a mix of people bringing lunch, going out, or picking up something on campus. So far there is only one coworker (also a friend) who cares, and thats cause she likes to see some of my creations (and admits, they usually smell tasty LOL). She also loves to see me work the chopsticks LOL.

Another knows I do them, but doesn't ask to see them or anything (though she'll look if I want to show off something). The rest, don't even bat an eye. Of course, most people in my office think I'm "different" anyway, and I usually eat at my desk because I work through lunch. LOL

Not anymore, in general. Last year, in University in Spain, it was actually the other way: we kind of looked down on people who had to buy food, though we didn't really appreciate our mothers for filling the tupperware (no bentos) with food each morning. And the only way I was able to follow a diet was thanks to taking lunch from home every single day.

But I am embarassed about two things related to my bento hobby/obsession:
1. Showing my Asian friends my bento boxes (with or without it). I'm afraid they'll laugh or think I am stupid.
2. Seeing the blank looks on people's faces when they ask me why I do it. Why? Because it's varied, pretty, and healthy. And more importantly: because I want to!

It's funny this topic came up, because a friend of mine was interested in packing bento lunches, but anytime she mentioned it to people, they would laugh or just say, "Okay, whatever," and she was wondering if I got the same comments.

I really don't get any weird comments or anything. I bring my packed lunches to the cafeteria in my office with my friends, who bring their lunches about 50-75% of the time as well (though not packed bento-style). The only comments I really get are about how cute something is, or just questions about what I made that day - but we all ask each other what we made for lunch. Though I eat with my friends, I am in a crowded cafeteria, but I've never noticed anyone else looking at my lunch or my cute little boxes.

I should say that most comments I have gotten are positive, even though most people don't seem to understand why I do it. I recently moved to a new location in the office so a new group of folks will get to see my lunches, which is why I posted this topic yesterday.

I'm sure the novelty of seeing me at the office with my little boxes will wear off soon. ;)

Intereseting topic! I was kind of wondering the same thing - I just started taking bentos to work because I can't go home for lunch anymore. I haven't actually experienced any of these things yet, because I eat at my desk so I can read. (Our lunchroom is super packed and noisy.)

A lot of my co-workers pack lunches in those giant bags with a bazillion tupperware, or else just get fast food. People in my area of the midwest are definitely over eaters, from what I can tell of their lunches. I've shown my bento to a few people I'm friends with, and they're always shocked that that's all I eat for lunch.

Everyone loves my bento-ish lunches. They always comment on how cute everything looks in its own little compartment, and how healthy/colourful. I have had a few kids (I teach at a school) ask me where I got the lunchbox from. I don;t usually eat with the kids, but sometimes I do, and they always notice the box. One time, I did a theme---cut everything into heart shapes for Valentine's Day. It took ages, too! I have learned now and only use the cutters for quick and easy things. But anyway, when I showed up at work with the heart food, I had one co-worker remark that I must have too much free time.

It's not a choice for me anymore, though. I have been diagnosed with food allergies, and I pretty much have to pack food with me now.

I am a teacher as well. I don't eat with my students, but when they come in to help or have detention they like to see what "cute" and strange things I brought. They also comment on my cute "lunch bags" as they see them sitting on my desk.

The co-workers I eat with are cool about it. They often finish off food I'm too full to eat, and one of them loves to try new things so she usually picks at my lunch. Other teachers comment on how much time I must spend making them, but it isn't a chore for me. I am a crafty person, and this is just a fun, everyday, edible craft!

At first I was a little embarrassed (and sometimes still am), but I have to admit I like the attention (and I am definately not an attention whore!).

i thought i would be embarrassed, but my coworkers that i eat with were extremely interested in my bentos and thought they were a great idea for portion control (most of the ladies i work with are older and wanting to lose weight). i think they feel it's weird how small of a lunch i eat compared to their giant meals, but so far, i haven't gotten any strangeness from it.

BUT i should point out that thus far, my bentos aren't really all that cutesy, as i do not eat seafood or eggs, and i don't have cutesy cutters (yet).

My husband is probably my biggest critic. He thinks my bento habit is a fad. He thinks I spend too much money on it. However, I really stopped buying containers unless I am doing something and what I have doesn't fit the purpose.

My co-workers are too busy working to care about my eating habits. Sometimes they are curious but its rare.

I like making my bentos and I don't always do them. It depends on the time I have. I don't post my sloppy bentos. hehe....

However, I am making bentos because I want to be healthy and its teaching me to break bad habits.

I also love being creative. Any excuse will do for me.

Also because of making bentos, I gungho to try new things, and I have fallen in love with Tastybite meals!

Hi everyone - new here and fairly new to bento, but glad to be here!

This is a rather nerve-touching topic for me. I live in Dallas, and I don't eat a lot of meat, fried things or huge food, so people pretty much think I'm weird no matter WHAT I'm eating. :-( I hate to let it get to me, but I do take it a bit personally - after all, I don't judge their food!

Anyway, I'm entitled to free lunch at work which I sometimes take advantage of, but most days I pack a bento (mostly for health reasons). The only person at this job that's ever said anything was our chef - he asked me why I brought my lunch with a rather crestfallen look on his face. I think I hurt his feelings - then I felt bad!

I've only had people seem critical or judging a few times, and I usually turn it on them, saying "well it's better than some greasy fried sandwich."

It usually shuts them up. Most people don't care, or think it's just tupperware. I eat in an office which is set up pretty privately so it's not too much of an issue.

I mostly feel silly because I am overweight so I feel like this huge person eating this tiny lunch, even though I find it quite satisfying.

This is so interesting for me. I just found this site. I live in Japan, but I don't ever make my own bentos. I work in a public Junior High and Elementary schools here. At the Elementary school, I eat the delious and healthy hot school lunch, but at the Junior High we have school bentos that can be ordered. So if I want a bento I just order it. In fact, if I don't have time to make my lunch, bento is my only option. But I often bring my lunch, and the intrigue you guys experience from co-workers is the same because my lunch is NOT a bento. They are so curious about how I can make such big salads with so much in them. Or sandwiches with so much on them. I have also introduced couscous and tabouli and other middle-eastern foods to co-workers. And quiche as well. Everyday I get asked, "What do you have today?" If I have nothing, then it is a bento day. You guys have inspired me to start trying to make my own bentos. After all, I should take advantage of living in a country where supermarkets cater to filling those bento boxes.

My coworkers never see my lunch unless we have a lunchtime staff meeting, and then they are usually too busy stuffing themselves with the free food to notice mine. Most of the curious questions that I get about my lunch are more about the food itself (I'm a vegan, and people like to stand there and ask 10,000 questions about my food while I'm trying to eat - grr!) than the bento style. A couple of people have told me that they like how I wrap my lunches up "like little presents".

I took a bento to a family dinner once, and everyone was impressed. I think that my family has come to expect the unusual (in their eyes) from me. :o)

But now I love my bento lunches. I think it also has to do with the fact that it's very common for students to bring a lunch in college here in Sweden. In fact, at my college, there are rooms with 20+ microwaves, fridges and sinks. Everyone brings their lunch in a plain container and I've got these 2-tiered super cute bento boxes. I get quite a few curious looks from the other people.

but my friends loved them and thought they were so cute, and my boyfriend's mom told me i should market them to people because they're so healthy and nice looking. and in the end i decided i liked having bento for me and i didn't car what other people thought, it was just my lunch.

i usually made bento for my boyfriend too and i always thought he'd be embarassed to have his own special lunchbox with japanese food and chopsticks, but he said he really liked them and didn't care what his friends said, he'd just tell them "at least i have a girlfriend.. and one that makes me lunches no less" and they wouldn't say anything lol! SublimeBento says:

It's weird how people immediately label or think of someone as strange because of subtle difference in the way we eat our lunch.

This is what I have experienced in the workplace in one office over the course of 18 months (casual/media environment):

-people who brought in their own lunch from home, an indian girl brought her gujrati indian influenced food (mostly leftovers), a chinese girl bought in some healthy but dry looking stews and stir frys, the northern-english fella bought in his amazing international cuisine leftovers from the night before. Everyone packed their food in ordinary containers and warmed them in the microwave or ate them cold. These people hardly ever went out for lunch. They don't know it, but I kind of reckon they were bento'ing rustic-style...

-then there were people who bought supplies from the local supermarket and then assembled their lunches in the staff kitchen (awesome space). They saved mucho money spending £10 at the beginning of the week and making that last 5-8 days. But think of it you end up eating same food for lunch everyday :(

-finally there were the dummies (like me) who would buy food like sandwiches and fattening foods at lunch or even go to local restaurants and pay through our noses for sub-standard food.

I've since learned that the first bunch of people were the sensible ones. I knew they were saving money primarily but the result of that was nutritious meals. Now that I Bento, I see people giving my food the 'once over', even my best friend when I told her about my bento'ing, just didn't get it and brushed it off as a fad...

So... basically my point was this, people will perceive something different as alien and their reactions may not always be polite. The great thing about the UK is that people largely ignore what you do, they may notice it and you may notice that they notice, but they keep it and their comments to themselves. Luckily I haven't experienced any bad/rude/weird reactions, but am expecting anything to happen when I join my new workplace... :)

I'm now so scared of pulling out my new Mr Bento if it's going to be a open plan office...!

(Side Note: I hate it when colleagues/friends try and dig into my lunch with their hands or used spoons/forks, I find it so hard to say no and end up being put off my food because of the hygiene factor).

My situation is a bit unique, because I work for a research institute where most of the staff are not American. The Chinese researchers all have bento of their own and LOVE my bento boxes! Theirs are the inexpensive Chinese kind so mine seem very chic in comparison. They are quite tickled with the bento-packing American.

If I were still back in southern Mississippi where I moved from last year, however, it would be a TOTALLY different story. While I was well-liked by my co-workers, they always considered me to be a space alien. It's an extremely conservative part of the country so anything out of the "norm" is regarded with great suspicion. They gave me enough grief for getting sushi takeout from the local sushi restaurant and bringing it back to eat, so I know the guys would have given me HELL if I had brought a bento lunch!

I am very self-conscious about eating around people; I'm overweight, and people like me would get picked on for eating at all. Some people seem to assume that fat people should just stop eating until they're the right weight!

I've been interested in Bento for a while; both my husband and I are very interested in Japanese culture and cuisine, and I always wanted to pack lunches for him, except we dated long distance. Recently his father passed away, and I started finally making bento in an attempt to cheer him up. He says no one has noticed him in the work room at all, and he doesn't mind how 'cute' his meals look, either. But my parents, his mother, and siblings all think that it's a 'stupid' fad and 'stupid' to waste time making food look 'cute' or pretty.

Still, I'm making bentos for myself as well now, and am discovering it's MUCH easier to control one's portions when it's all pre-measured. And when it's fresh, tasty, and easy on the eyes to boot, I'm learning I'm satisfied with much less, instead of eating too much. I think that alone is worth it, but I have taken to eating my meals alone and trying to not eat at my inlaw's so I don't get picked on - if I bring my own meal, they mock me. If I eat theirs, they tell me I ate too much!

'Fraid I can't give much advice. Some people will always pick on those who are different from them, or those they don't understand.

At my workplace, people literally line up their lunch to have it microwaved, or some their sandwiches to have them toasted. Everyone knows how expensive it is to buy or eat out so there is no shame in brining your lunch. But on fridays, we usually all splash out a bit and go out for a nice meal :)

This discussion thread fascinated me. In our lunch room there are often comments, but more about..."That smells good! Whose lunch is that?" Although I must admit we do tease one young man, slim and trim, who eats double meals. (Most of us are ladies watching our weight...) But he teases right back about WW and points.... As to my new hobby of Bento lunches....someone suggested I needed a second job if I had time to create bento lunches ....but I am the Queen of Multicultural meals in their eyes anyway, so this is just the next page in my food journal. And truly, is it anyone's business what we eat? Happy bentoing!

I do get a bit self concious eating from my bento lunch jar in the college canteen at lunch. I never get the whole thing out of my bag and just take a container out at a time before replacing it in the jar. Eating with chopsticks doesn't bother me though, and as time goes by I am getting less bothered as to what other people think...
