About Benin
Benin, officially the Republic of Benin, is a country in Western Africa, formerly known as Dahomey (until 1975) or Dahomania. It borders Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north; its short coastline to the south leads to the Bight of Benin. Its capital is Porto Novo, but the seat of government is Cotonou.
t is believed that Vodun (or "Voodoo", as it is commonly known) originated in Benin and was introduced to Brazil, the Caribbean Islands, and parts of North America by slaves taken from this particular area of the Slave Coast. The indigenous religion of Benin is practiced by about 60% of the population. Since 1992 Vodun has been recognized as one of Benin's official religions, and a National Vodun Holiday is celebrated on January 10.
La République du Bénin, pays d'Afrique occidentale compte 7 513 946 habitants en 2006, et couvre une superficie de 112 622 km² en s'étendant sur 670 km, du fleuve Niger (au nord) à la côte atlantique (au sud). Le pays a comme voisin, le Togo à l'ouest, le Nigéria à l'est et Le Niger et le Burkina Faso au nord.
Le Bénin a accédé à l'indépendance complète le 1er août 1960, sous la dénomination de république du Dahomey, avant de prendre son nom actuel en 1975. Les pouvoirs furent transmis au président Maga par le ministre Louis Jacquinot. La capitale officielle est Porto-Novo ; Cotonou étant la capitale économique.
Le pays (surnommé un temps le « quartier latin de l'Afrique » ) a comme langue officielle le français et comme monnaie le franc CFA. Le régime du Bénin est présidentiel et son chef d'État est Boni Yayi qui a succédé à Mathieu Kérékou lors des élections du 19 mars 2006.
