2012 sees the celebration of 50 years since the Bedford VAL chassis began on our roads. To celebrate this, gathering are currently being arranged for the AEC event at Newark and Showbus 2012 (More details in "Discussion" section - "VAL 50th Anniversary")

About Bedford VAL - Twin Steer Coach

Hi. This Group is for any Bedford VAL Pictures.

The Bedford VAL Chassis was designed in 1961 at the time of the new motorway networks. These vehicles were unique for their front twin-steer axles, and smaller wheels for lower floor height. The twin steer design was promoted as a safety feature in the event of a high speed blowout and also provided a very comfortable ride for passengers.

There were two different types of Bedford VAL.
• Bedford VAL 14 - Produced between 1963 - 1967. Was powered by a Leyland 0.400cu engine.
• Bedford VAL 70 - Produced between 1967 - 1973. Was powered by a Bedford 466cu engine.

In 1973, 10 years after the first Bedford VAL was produced, the production came to the end.

Within the 10 years of production just over 2,000 Bedford VALS were produced. Pictures from this pool help to remember them.
