About Butterflies and Moths in Northern Ireland

This group is for sharing photographs of butterflies and moths you have seen around Northern Ireland, especially if you are not sure what you have photographed!

If you are not sure what you have seen other users will help you identify your creature. The hope is we can increase our knowledge of what beasties are where by encouraging more people to look at these fragile and beautiful insects. Moths and Butterflies are very sensitive to environmental change, and by studying them we can learn more about the health of our environment over time.

If possible please include;
What - if you know what your beastie is, name it (don't worry if you don't know what it's called)
When - the date you saw your beastie,
Where - the location (a town name and postcode or a grid reference)

Our webpage www.bcni.org.uk has a sightings page where you can record your sightings, and also a location finder which will help you work out a grid reference.
Otherwise you can use www.gridreference.ie

Butterfly Conservation Northern Ireland (BCNI) may contact you in relation to your photograph, especially if you have discovered a rare or under recorded creature.
