About Along and Around the Bayou - Bayou St John - New Orleans, LA
This group was created to document and achieve in pictures the area’s rich past, its struggle to overcome and rebuild from the ravages inflicted by Hurricane Katrina, its thriving present and bright future.
The bayou was first used as a short trail connecting Lake Pontchartrain to the Mississippi River. The route was blazed by the Bayogoula and Biloxi Indians and shown to Jean Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville in 1699. New Orleans was eventually founded on May 7, 1718.
Bayou St. John began its formal history as a route known as the Old Portage; it was paramount to the establishment of the City of New Orleans. The area was not within the original city limits but it is older than the City itself. Local historians have their own interpretations as to which street is now actually the oldest in the City but one fact is for certain, it lies within this area.
The wonderful old houses, businesses, The Fairgrounds Race Track, churches, schools, cemeteries, City Park, numerous festivals, its people, unique culture and the area’s history deserves to be preserved for all to see and enjoy.
Please help bring to life this charming, unique, and special area of New Orleans - Along and Around Bayou St. John!
