About Protective Mimicry

This group is about species that gain protection from predators by mimicing other species that are unpalatable or dangerous. Whether the mimic itself is palatable or not (Batesian or Müllerian), it can be posted to this group.

To avoid duplicating other groups, please consider posting there first:

- Bee Mimicry for hoverfly photos (though there are some other interesting bee mimics you can post here too).

- Mimicing inanimate objects belongs in the Crypsis group.

- Camouflage belongs in the Camouflage group

- There are many other types of mimicry not covered by this group or any of the groups listed above. This being flickr, there's a group for that too: Other Mimicry.

To boost awareness of this group, you might add the following to your comments on group posts:

From the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/batesian/">Protective Mimicry pool</a>.

No other rules (that's enough)! The discussions so far have been as interesting as the photos, so be sure to check them out!

Further information about this group:

Here, we are talking about the false advertiser's of the animal world: the Batesian mimics. These are palatable mimic species that closely resemble an unpalatable model species. The mimic gains protection from predators in this way.

We are also taking about brand identity: Müllerian mimicry. This is when many unpalatable animals coverge on a common appearance, lessening the need for expensive taste tests by predators on any given species in the mimicry complex.

For a listing of mimicry types, see this Wikipedia article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimicry
