With Romanesque art, the Basque Country proclaims its integration into the Europe that ha been unified by language and culture as from the beginning of the 11th century.
Felix Mugurutza considers the Romanesque art as “a European language” and the Basque Romanesque art as an expression of a people. Their artistic language was favoured by the opening of the Way to Santiago de Compostela.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Given the long fought political changes which altered disputed territories between the Anadluz and Vascones and later between the kingdom of Pamplona and Castlle (to mention only two such territorial disputes) and the fact that one of the roads to Compostella cross the mountainous region of La Rioja we decided to include this province in this group.
