About Basic Editing

The emphasis for this group is not on what you did or didn't do to edit your photo; it is on capturing interesting images, which may or may not then be given some basic editing to make them really shine.

Inspired in part by the Basic Editing rules on dpchallenge, and in part by wanting to have a group like No Photoshop Here or No Post Production, and yet with a little more latitude for those of us who feel that an image often wants some slight tweaking. So, this group is meant to show off those images which are minimally post-processed (or not at all is OK too). Basically anything that meets the dpchallenge Basic Editing rules (with the notable exception that film shots are perfectly allowed, this isn't a digital-only group) will probably OK, although it should be noted that extreme use of curves and such are allowed by those rules, but not the point here. So, the rules here for now shall be:

* Photos must match a conservative reading of the Basic Editing rules published on dpchallenge. Put simply, this means minimal post production... Some examples:
- cropping is fine;
- contrast adjustment is fine;
- levels and/or curves is fine;
- whole-image color correction is fine;
- pixel-specific manipulations (e.g. spot removal, or any form of compositing) are not allowed;
- extreme manipulation with otherwise allowed methods (e.g. curves that go negative in their slope, though that's just one example) are not allowed;
- completely unedited images are certainly welcome.

* Because dpchallenge is digital-only, a special exception is made here for film, which is allowed. In fact, I'm thinking even somewhat extreme darkroom manipulation will be allowed, as long as the digital-side editing is kept to the rules listed above. (So cross-processing is certainly allowed, and maybe even something like scans of solarized prints or the like would also be allowed.)

* no spamming (handwave, handwave -- this is left to your interpretation for now, and will be more clearly specified at a later date if deemed necessary. Especially slack at the beginning of the group's life.)

* There's perhaps a slight emphasis (though this isn't actually a rule) on images which a viewer might be surprised to see aren't "photoshop fakes" or otherwise heavily manipulated.

Hmm, I believe that's it to get us started... adjustments to be made as necessary -- but they'll just be basic edits. :-)
