About Baren
This group is created with the intention of presenting images of original color woodblock prints created with traditional Japanese moku-hanga techniques and the tools used in their creation. The process represented consists of hand-carved woodblocks and water or oil based pigments, printed with a traditional Japanese tool called a baren on dampened hand-made papers. This site does NOT embrace Western woodblock or woodcut techniques which use printing presses or techniques which only imitate Japanese prints. The scope of these images will hopefully encompass the entire history of Japanese-style printmaking both in Japan and the West from its inception until the present. Please give credit to the artist and/or printmaker when known, and dimensions of the image. Because of rarity some images from books are acceptable if accompanied by a proper bibliographical citation.
