The Banksy group "Short Guide to Banksy vs Bristol Museum"

view profile

shell shock is a group administrator shell shock  Pro User  says:

By popular demand, the admin monkeys at the Banksy group have trawled 2,000+ photos, poured over a hotch potch of info, asked members stupid questions, and driven (sorry Melf!) many miles to the Museum, just to bring you this short guide to the greatest exhibition of all time (well, maybe....the art jury is drunk and is utterly incapable of anything, including a verdict)

TO ALL OUR GROUP MEMBERS - Please help us by posting any amendments or suggestions you might have. Together we can perfect this guide :-)

Banksy Versus Bristol Museum

Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery
Queen's Road
Bristol
BS8 1RL

13 June - 31 August

FREE EXHIBITION
Open Daily 10am- 5pm
Tel: 0117 922 3571

“Situated in between the very tall H H Wills memorial building (University of Bristol) and Browns restaurant, at the top of Park Street.

By Bus: Numbers 1, 8, 8a, 9, 40, 40a, 41, 54”

Website - www.bristol.gov.uk/ccm/navigation/leisure-and-culture/mus...

How Do I Get There?

From Bristol Temple Meads Train Station (BS1 6QF)

Bus - The numbers 8, 8A and 9 all leave from just outside the main station entrance and stop opposite the museum. Follow the link below for an online timetable (this one is for Monday to Friday but there are links on that page for weekend tables):

www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/southwest/bristol/timetables/tim...

Or you can get a number 54 or a number 1 (both heading for ‘Cribbs Causeway’) from the main road (A4) that runs past the entrance road to the station. Just walk down the incline from the station, and cross over the road, and you’ll see the bus stop outside the Reckless Engineer pub.

If you can’t spot where the museum is, ask someone. It should be pretty easy to spot though. It’s on the right hand side, at the top of the steep ‘Park St’, next to the very tall Wills Building (it looks like a Cathedral, but it isn’t…that will teach you to nudge your friend, pretending to be clever, saying "That's the Cathedral..." )

Walk - It’s about a 30 minute walk from the train station, and once you get off the busy roads by the station it is a pleasant walk. Past St Mary Redcliffe (famous Church with enormous spire). Over the floating harbour, through Queens Square (which is pedestrianised to a degree), or a detour to see Bansky’s boating reaper on the side of the Thekla (floating club). Then up Park St (past the Bristol Cathedral if you want, especially convenient if you’ve come through the harbour area) and have a photo op at Banksy’s Window Lovers (bottom of Park St - opposite the end of the crescent shaped Council building). Continue up Park St and you can hardly miss the Museum at the top of the street, on your right. If you are around late enough, or on a Sunday, the shutter at the Rollermania shop (62 Park Row, BS1 5LE) is usually down in the evenings and on Sunday. It’s a very early Banksy and Kato freehand collaboration, although it’s nothing like what you’d now expect from Banksy!

Ferry Boat (we kid you not….) - If you want a slightly different experience, you can also get the Ferry from Temple Meads. The landing stage is a 3 minute walk from the railway station's main foyer (follow the white 'ferry' signs). This is West Country so bring yer own life jackets :-)

Take the ferry to the landing stage by The SS Great Britain. Then walk through the Harbourside Village towards the new City of Bristol College, over Deanery Road, up York Place onto Brandon Hill. Then past Cabot Tower on your left and into Berkeley Square right opposite the museum.

If you prefer to use other landing stages, there are others that might be of use (e.g. ‘Prince St‘, ‘Millennium Square‘, and ‘City Centre’).

For full information, use their website - www.bristolferry.com

From Bristol Coach / Bus Station (Marlborough Street, BS1 3NU)

The coach / bus station is easier to walk from than the train station, and is no longer the skanky tramp hangout that it used to be :-) It’s also close to the main shopping area so if your other half / friends need retail therapy, they can do that whilst you look at Banksy’s anti-consumerist messages...

From the front of the coach station you just walk up and up the main road basically, bearing right when needed (Marlborough St / Upper Maudlin St etc - the road changes name 4 times before you get to the museum!). Around the half way mark you also come across Banksy’s sniper (look backwards down the hill to see it - it‘s just after the hospital, on the side wall of the office for the ‘Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal’)

It’s hardly worth taking a bus, unless you really want to, but several will go up that way I imagine. Frankly I got bored of writing this guide at this point.....

If you have time, it’s a 15 minute round detour from the coach station to see Banksy’s ‘Mild Mild West’ mural (walk along Jamaica St, and it’s at the junction with the main rd - Stokes Croft).

By Car

Central Bristol is relatively easy to get from any direction. Many people use the M32 route. You can keep to the signposted main roads, or if you feel brave enough to navigate the smaller streets, you can come off at J3 of the M32 and go up through St Pauls or Cotham / Kingsdown.

There are plenty of car parks (e.g. NCP car parks at West End and Trenchard Street) and on-street parking in the area. If money is tight there's some free on street parking you can fight over, about a 5/10 minute walk away. It’s around the back of the main roads, near the various University and hospital buildings in the area (e.g. Tyndall’s Park Rd, Belgrave Rd, and part of Elmdale Rd)

What is in the Exhibition?

The exhibition is officially ginormous. Easily Banksy’s biggest exhibition ever.

Apparently it contains 100 artefacts, of which 78 of them are new.

Although there are several whole rooms dedicated just to Banksy‘s work, there are also bits of his work dotted all around the various rooms of the Museum / Gallery. The guide below tries to round them all up.

We have already noticed that some exhibits seem to have moved over time (or possibly even turned up late for the bash...?), so please don't think we are totally mad if something isn't there, has moved, is wrong, makes you looks stupid, causes an argument with your partner, etc

Please help us by giving us any amendments or suggestions you might have. Together we can perfect this guide :-)

NOTE - the names we've given them aren't necessarily 'official', correct or sensible. Some may be funny, but it can't be guaranteed. We aren't paid [in peanuts] to make you laugh you know......

There is a free small flyer/guide to exhibition available at the venue (see below). For ease of wandering, this guide references some of the (usually unofficial) room names given on there.

ON THE BUILDING

On 23rd July, a dummy dressed as Ronald McDonald appeared on the outside of the building (directly above the main entrance), sitting on a ledge, with a bottle of whisky by his side. It's very strongly assumed to be by Banksy, given the location and the subject (Ronnie has been used by him before...).

I think it's just a mix-up on the name. I think we are all talking about the same statue, and in the same place. I called it paedophile priest because when I first saw it at the preview he had 4 lollipops in his hand. By the time I returned on the first Monday only 2 were left. So I suspect it may now be lollipop-less and thus in need of a new, more appropriate, name.... :-)

It's the same statue yea, obviously someone got the lollipops hence why I couldn't quite make sense of the name.

sorry all, but our special correspondent has just been advised (via the Museum) that the two bits in the evolution case in the Darwin section (1st Floor) are NOT by Banksy and are actually part of the normal display (shows museums have a sense of humour sometimes!)

they were the ones with captions saying “Here are examples of potential new animals that may evolve on earth”, and “How we make ourselves attractive to the opposite sex” (cosmo magazine).

The crate and balloons (in the 'another cafe' - ground floor) are confirmed as 100% Banksy though.

Riverbank Ratty (with spray can) is in the 'River Bank' cabinet in the
British & South West Wildlife Room, which is the first room on the left as soon as you go in....

from my hazy memory the worms on a book were in the darwin bit I think, and are part of the normal display I believe...

Lol at 'mind the crap' - quite fitting really (whoever did it...) as that's what Banksy did outside the Tate Britain before one of the yearly Turner prizes

Does anyone know if the Fossilized dino sick sticker is Banksy?

It's in the fossil section next to the bit where you can feel the dino skin, if you move right along that exhibit there's a circular sticker which says fossilized dino skin and you look through the circle and you can see scales. Move along right a little more and there is another sticker but this one says dino sick. Both stickers are stuck on the underside of the glass. I'm guessing the skin one is supposed to be there, but I did inspect the dino sick one quite closely and it's not cut as well as the other.

there are some FAQ's here.

www.bristol.gov.uk/ccm/content/Leisure-Culture/Museums-Ga...

Personally, the snippets of info that are extra interesting to me are these....

Q - Will the exhibition really close on Monday, 31 August?
A - Yes, we have explored the possibility of extending the run of the exhibition, however there are a few reasons why this can’t be arranged, namely: some of the pieces in the show are on loan from private lenders, which need to be returned.

Q - Will you do it again next year?
A - No. This was a unique and one off exhibition.......

Thanks for this guide, I went again yesterday.
Someone had camped out all night I went at 7am and people were there from 5am, madness. A nice muesum official told me to come back at 5.30 so I did and only had to wait about 2 hours.

A few things had been changed and I still could not find the Difaced tenners.

It was worth it though and I found this guide very helpful.

Wish I was an owner of a new work........my budget only managed the stickers and postcards from the oxfam shop.

Thanks Banksy for a great show.

I realise this is a bit late (and many people know about it), but worth putting a handy link here anyway.....

A list of the exhibits came out, via a Freedom of Information request to BCC (Bristol City Council). It is obviously incomplete, but better than nothing - I assume it was a double sided document and only one side was scanned in, so we just get alternate pages.

The whole FOI to'ing and fro'ing is available here.....

www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/banksy_exhibition

The specific document that contains the exhibit list is the third one down on the list of pdfs - this one.....

I did mean to use this list to update the names in the guide, but it was August and nothing much gets done in that month :-)

by the by, I was in the Museum last week and noticed that the 'dinosaur sick' is still there, so as suspected it was a normal exhibit, and not one from Mr.B

Hi folks, I thought you might like to see a photo I found on flickr of Banksy's white bunny, on display at "Pets Paradise" shop in Bristol, in March 2009.

Pet Shop Paradise, Redcliffe Hill, Bristol by brizzle born and bred

Link to photo: www.flickr.com/photos/brizzlebornandbred/3353748742/

The chap who took the photo has also provided a written history of the shop:

There can't be many Bristolians who don't know Pets Paradise - after all, it's been a feature of city life for more than 150 years. We look back at the shop's history. Geoff Lewis tells me that the pet shop which he has run for the past couple of years from a tucked away corner shop in St Nicholas Market started life on Redcliffe Hill in 1855.

Throughout Victorian times, and indeed right up to the war years, this remained a busy shopping area with eight or nine historic pubs or inns, such as The Ship (which survived as a well-known jazz venue until it was demolished in 1968), The Hope And Anchor, The Shepherd's Rest and the Boar's Head.

Thriving trades, then on the hill, included everything from basket makers to boot makers. Among them was Isaac Organ, who ran a haulage and furniture removal business with hay, corn and seeds for sale on the side. It was only natural that he should start selling this to people with pets, and in 1907, Mrs Kate Organ developed the business into a shop dealing specifically with these customers.

As well as offering such canine delights as Spratts Patent Dog Cakes and Spiller's Shapes, Kate also sold parrots, tortoises and the like. There must have been quite a lot of competition because, by 1934, the business trading motto was "Bristol's original and only pets' paradise".

The area suffered badly from Luftwaffe raids during World War II - you can still see the tramline that was bombed and thrown over into St Mary Redcliffe churchyard.

Organ's was badly hit in the Good Friday blitz in 1941, and then, in 1947, two years after the war had ended, fire destroyed the whole premises. Undeterred, the family set up shop once more - but this time in larger premises across the road.

Kate died, aged 80, in 1957, and six years later, with the construction of a second Bedminster Bridge, a whole rank of historic Redcliffe buildings were demolished. But Pets' Paradise survived, albeit under the shadow of the newly erected Waring House flats. Five years later, however, the Corporation decided, because of the vast increase in traffic, to widen Redcliffe Hill. This meant that the Guinea Street corner shop, along with many other long established premises, had to go.

It was then that the move was made to Victoria Street, opposite the Dickinson-Robinson building, not far from Bristol Bridge. It was a worrying time, but loyal customers ensured that the business prospered. But 10 years later, as Victoria Street was rebuilt and redeveloped, Pets Paradise was on the move again, this time to much smaller premises in St Nicholas Market, which is rented off the city council. Current owner Geoff, who lives in Totterdown, is now trying to re-establish the animal side of the business, something for which the old Victoria Street shop was well known.

"We have just got our licence," he enthused, "and can now start stocking such pets as hamsters, gerbils, budgies, goldfish, mice and rats."

Readers might be surprised to hear that rats make popular pets. But Geoff assures me they do. "I have already sold three or four," he told me, "and I've only had them in a few days. "And now, with the animals as well as the food, Pets' Paradise at last feels like a proper pet shop. "The pets aren't expensive, we sell them for between £8 and £12 each," he said.

"Our motto is, 'If you can't see it we can order it' - but of course that doesn't include such large animals as crocodiles," he joked. "The reason that we survive as a small shop - the supermarkets are very competitive - is because we offer a personal service and specialise in such things as meal worms, locusts, wax worms and crickets." These little beasties, he revealed, are bought as pet food. He also supplies rats and mice (frozen, of course) for people who keep pets such as owls. "I'm very proud to be continuing a business which Bristolians have supported for so long - there aren't many left," he said.

"There are only a few small pet shops remaining now, and the long- established Pets Paradise is one of them. "The most loyal customers are office workers, who come into the shop during their lunch break - but we are busy at weekends, too.

"Pets' Paradise is so well known - people used to come here as children - that I'd never consider changing the name."
