No idea but the lack of feet and use of gasmasks would point in B's direction. Bit late though isn't it ? or maybe forward thinking I haven't checked the weather forecast for New Orleons lately.

Third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. August 29, 2005.
Proper Banksy Feet, gas masks, tv sets, shopping carts, paint rollers, buffing graffiti, social and political commentary... all good indications this could be Banksy. Now if only we had some context shots.
Yes, it is nice to chat. How ya been?

His hero is Houdini, right? (Mr. Banksy, update your website, please. Sir.)
H/T to Prescription Art for #5. When Banksy hit Los Angeles this past January, several images appeared all at once there too. The McCaveman went up in two places and was flipped just like the buffers, 1 and 5.
Thanks for watching my video. As moronic as those quotes are, they took a ton of research to get accurate. The source links are posted with my illustrations here.
Now then, more on that gray ghost.

This is all great to know.
I put (School Of?) Banksy on the first photos I posted (= looting soldiers) because I hadn't yet heard that any of his other work had been spotted here in New Orleans, and it seemed odd that this would be an isolated piece. But within a few hours two other folks had posted shots from other parts of town, and I realized then that we were looking at the real thing(s).
As noted, it's made even more brilliant by the fact that we're celebrating (celebrating?) the third anniversary of Katrina this week, and this is one of the most interesting ways I can think of to mark the occasion. (Too bad we're also staring down another storm in the meantime ... )

That does it. Both wallkandy and info have picked up on this thread and no one doubts these are Banksy. So - dogpaddle, breaststroke, butterfly, sink or swim - I'm letting them all into the pool. Isn't this a lovely way to come back from lockdown?
Mr. jonnodotcom, thanks for bringing us your photos. They're all beautifully taken and they've made a whole lot of people happy today. Would it be too much to ask for more before they get gray-ghosted? (You think I'm kidding?)

I haven't had time to look too closely at the photos but at a quick look it looks like banksy to me - use of rain/drips, the girl, use of silhouettes, the ghettoblaster in the trolley, people with rollers, graffiti removal, copying the window, gasmasks, use of a stick man, and the general amazing quality of them. It has his name metaphorically written all over it....
I don't say this often, but they look stunning (whoever did them)!
The best collection of meaningful graff that I have seen for a VERY long time.

Saw all these here

British street artist Banksy has painted several murals in New Orleans to mark the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
The pictures are courtesy of banksy.co.uk
Banksy said: "Three years after Katrina I wanted to make a statement about the state of the clean-up operation."
The rebuilt levee wall offers not just better protection for the city, but also "the best painting surface in the state of Louisiana", according to Banksy.
Banksy said he went to the city to "join battle" against the Grey Ghost, a man who has covered graffiti across the city with the same shade of grey paint since 1997.

Nice photos, I especially appreciate the looters, quite a statement.
As for the "Grey Ghost", a possible solution: private property owner, commissions "art graff mural". The Grey Ghost strikes and is documented on video tape. The Grey Ghost is hit with criminal and civil charges.

Looks like he's on a road trip, found on Wooster

After leaving New Orleans, it appears that Banksy is now heading through the Deep South.
The piece below was spotted on an old abandoned Chevron Station near Birmingham Alabama. (We're told it's somewhere between where the 59 Freeway meets the 65 going South near a large Home Depot on the 59)

He HAS to leave New Orleans. They're expecting another hurricane the size of Katrina, of the highest stage called "category 5", and I think there is a mandatory evacuation going on. Actually, I haven't checked the news this morning so I don't know if it's hit yet or not.
A road trip through the deep south? Deliver us from evil.

350,000 people evacuated from the city today because of another hurricane..wtf?! If anyone is in the area, Rex Dingler, the founder of NOLA Rising has been shorted on his paycheck from his job and so with little or no funds, needs to get out of the city and have a safe place to stay!

Hurricane Gustav: How You Can Help
By Sam Graham-Felsen - Aug 31st, 2008 at 2:54 pm EDT
As Hurricane Gustav approaches and Gulf Coast residents evacuate their communities, our thoughts and prayers go out to those who are affected by this situation.
Mayor Ray Nagin has announced a mandatory evacuation for the City of New Orleans today, Sunday, August 31st. If you are in the New Orleans area, please contact the state emergency hotline at 1-866-288-2484 if you need more information or go to the State of Louisiana site for an updated list of evacuations by parish.
If you are a Mississippi resident, please click here for information.
State and local government officials are working hard to ensure the safety and well-being of the people of the region, and many of you have asked how you can help too.
Please find out how you can help by visiting the American Red Cross or Save The Children today.
If disaster strikes, your support will be vital to those organizations that work to help our communities get back to their feet.
Stay tuned for updates and more information on how you can help.

People are deliberately avoiding mentioning locations of the New Orleans ones because there is an "anti-graffiti" vigilante who covers everything with grey paint (including sometimes authorized art on private property). The vigilante has been known to troll the internet for info on locations of grafitti to paint over. He (or a minion/immitator) already destroyed at least 2 of the New Orleans Banksy works.

Space Time Fold: Re: the supposed photo of Banksy in New Orleans at supertouchart. The photo is of a person that is pretty much the stereotype of a clueless tourist-- wearing Mardi Gras beads way out of season and drinking an overpriced drink in a wacky novelty glass from one of the tourist trade bars on Bourbon Street. One often sees such visitors who only go to the tourist places in a small portion of the city and never outside it. The New Orleans Banksy works are NOT in the tourist section.
I have no idea if thie person in the photo is Banksy-- his New Orleans works suggest he is informed about local conditions and probably associates with locals who could steer him to less ersatz New Orleans experiences. However for all I know he might be amused by posing as the stereotype of the spring break frat boy tourist.

Re: Hurricane Gustav
New Orleans seems to have gotten only light damages and avoided conditions that could have been greatly devastating by a narrow margin.
Thanks to people who offered support. I'm sure donations to the Red Cross will go to good use, as some Louisiana communities to the South West of New Orleans were hit hard.
Best wishes to all.

Reports on Hurricane Banksy are now being issued by ABC News

photo : Gardner/Getty Images
Some nice context shots (because you can never have too many nice context shots) from
Getty Images : Banksy Graffiti Murals Pop Up Around New Orleans, Including Levee Wall
More on those Getty Images I've been noticing appears in The Times-Picayune:
Friday, September 05, 2008
Doug MacCash
Thank you, Getty
The New Orleans art scene has rebounded dramatically since the dismal days after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In ways, it's more vibrant than ever. The Getty Foundation, a Los Angeles-based philanthropic organization, has helped fuel that recovery by awarding almost $2.9 million dollars to local institutions.
Getty representatives first visited in November 2005. "Nothing could have prepared us," said Associate Director Joan Weinstein. "To see the devastation but simultaneously meet so many leaders of art organizations already trying, made it necessary to do something."
The results, she said, have been inspiring. "The way arts organizations are working together in the city is a fabulous lesson for the rest of the country."
A recent Getty grant recipient is Prospect 1 New Orleans, which received $150,000 in part to shuttle visitors from site to site during the citywide international art exhibition, opening Nov. 1.
--- Clandestine celebrity ---
E-mail blasts, blog notes and a New York Times blurb trumpeted that the British graffiti artist known as Banksy visited New Orleans in the waning days of August, applying illusionistic stencils to scattered sites. Banksy's works address the threats of Hurricane Gustav (a child swinging on a life saver as if it were a tire, for instance) and graffiti eradicator Fred Radtke (a gray workman blotting out sunflowers).
Banksy might be somewhat conflicted by his dual craving for attention (one e-mailer implied that he has a "representative") and anonymity, but it must be said that his realistic, relevant, trompe l'oeil stencils are a vast improvement over the unimaginative doodling favored by most Crescent City sprayers.
Arts writer Doug MacCash can be reached at dmaccash@timespicayune.com or 504.826.3481. Read him online at www.nola.com/arts.

Upon first seeing the girl with the rain under her umbrella, I expressed the opinion that it might be Banksy's comment on how our politicians failed to protect the victims of Katrina.
Now that I've seen a photo of the building on which the umbrella girl was placed, I can't say I want to change my opinion any. He placed the image on a ruined Drop-in Center.
So there you go. What better illustration could I give you? Context shots are useful in understanding the full meaning of Banksy's work.

Countercurrents : Gustav Impact On Louisiana And Haiti
By Bill Quigley
05 September, 2008
Hurricane Gustav killed 18 people in Louisiana and displaced 1.9 million. Over 800,000 homes are without electricity, nearly half the state, and some will not see power for up to a month.
In Haiti, Gustav killed 77 with another 8 missing and damaged nearly 15,000 homes. Tropical storm Hanna, which closely followed Gustav, killed at least another 60 people. Tens of thousands of people have sought safety on rooftops and temporary shelters. Rotting cows drift in the flood waters.
Louisiana is the poorest state in the U.S., home to nearly 4 million people, with per capita income of around $16,000 per year. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, home to nearly 9 million people, with a per capita income of less than $400 per year.
In Louisiana, gas and water are scarce. On Thursday September 4, 2008, authorities reported a 3 mile line of people waiting for food and water outside of New Orleans. The evacuation of 1.9 million people in Louisiana went relatively smoothly. The return has been much more difficult.
Reports from community organizations in Haiti say people have not eaten since Monday. Melinda Miles from Konpay reported: “Twenty four hours of rain drenching the huts of the poor, perched on the cliffs, and drowning the slums, huddled on the edge of the sea. Homes were washed away by overflowing rivers, and others had flash floods tear through their walls. Fields of plantain trees are now stagnant puddles – breeding ground for mosquitoes – and agricultural fields were destroyed throughout the region. Almond trees floated into the sea and coconut trees were uprooted.”
Tens of thousands of people in Louisiana remain displaced. A thousand people in one shelter reported there were no bathing facilities at all. People washed up in a bucket. Another shelter reported 30 people arrested outside a nearby convenience store. Buses will start bringing people back on Friday.
Haiti was in deep trouble before being hit by a series of storms. Hunger is widespread. Sky high food prices sparked riots and turmoil as people could not afford to purchase enough food.
Louisiana had not yet recovered from Hurricane Katrina, three years ago. New Orleans still has over 65,000 vacant and abandoned homes and over 100,000 fewer people since Katrina. Many of the elderly, disabled and African-American working poor remain displaced.
"There is no food, no water, no clothes," the pastor of a church in Gonaives, Arnaud Dumas told the Associated Press. "I want to know what I'm supposed to do. ... We haven't found anything to eat in two, three days. Nothing at all."
Critics question why prisoners in New Orleans were returned by public transportation days before tens of thousands of citizens had the same opportunity.
President Rene Preval of Haiti told Reuters, “We are in a really catastrophic situation. There are a lot of people on rooftops and there are prisoners we cannot guard.” In Gonaives, a city of 160,000, half the homes remain flooded, according to UN troops. People begged for food and water outside the UN troop base.
"All and all, the response has been excellent," U.S. President Bush told the nation. The U.S. Embassy in Haiti announced it was releasing $100,000 in emergency aid to Haiti.
In Haiti, the situation is critical. “If they don’t have food, it can be dangerous,” Haitian Senator Youri Latortue told the AP. “They can’t wait.”
“We expect a surge of evictions and power cutoffs,” said Brother Don Everard of Hope House, a social service agency in New Orleans. “People were having trouble making rent and utilities before evacuating for Gustav, now it will be worse because they have spent all their money to evacuate.”
Haiti is 1300 miles away from New Orleans. Other hurricanes are now approaching the Caribbean.
