About Ayo Gorkhali

Welcome to the Ayo Gorkhali group! We'd like to invite you to share your images, thoughts and recollections of Nepal and the British Gurkhas with us here.

Some of the material contributed to the group is from the 'Ayo Gorkhali' website: www.ayo-gorkhali.org an online educational resource that celebrates the history and legacy of the British Gurkhas. The project takes its name from the Gurkha battle cry, ‘Jai Mahakali, Ayo Gorkhali!’ (‘Victory to goddess Mahakali, the Gurkhas are here!').

The site features a unique interactive Timeline covering 2,800 years of Nepali (Nepalese) and Gurkha history: http://www.ayo-gorkhali.org/index.php/en/timeline/ and exclusive clips from an educational DVD produced for one of the project's sponsors, the Gurkha Museum Winchester.

As part of the project, we are linking schools in Brecon, Wales, with schools and charities in Nepal and inviting students in both countries to contribute to the Ayo Gorkhali website. We are working with members of the Welsh and Gurkha communities will incorporate their testimonies into the site as well.

At its heart the 'Ayo Gorkhali' project is about encouraging understanding between different communities and cultures and celebrating the rich heritage that the British Gurkhas and the people of Nepal and the United Kingdom all share.
