About Available Light / Existing Light

Ever since the beginnings of photography as a viable art form, photographers learning the craft have come to discover the special magic and character of photos taken using only available or existing light. At times taken under difficult and challenging lighting conditions, this style of photography frequently rewards the photographer with images that can be more appealing and interesting than those taken with flash or studio light.

This group is a place for available light photographers to share their images, help others with shooting tips or to ask for technical advice, and give feedback on the work of other photographers or ask for commentary and feedback on their own images.

Type of Images
Photos must be taken using only available or existing light. The ambient light can be from any natural or artificial light already in the scene, such as the sun, moon, stars, room lights, candlelight, street lamps etc. No additional light such as flash or studio light is allowed. Avoid images which show sunlight throughout the entire scene. Light from overcast or cloudy skies, hazy sun, or open shade is acceptable. Avoid the typical sunset type shot, although the setting sun used in a unique way is acceptable.

Group Policies
Please restrict your submissions to the group pool to no more than five images a day. The group accepts only original work so please submit only images that you yourself have taken. Remember the work you submit to the group represents you as a photographer so be selective with your work and choose only your best images. Pirated images, heavily post-processed photos, and unnatural-looking HDR's will be removed from the pool. Please do not resubmit images once they have been deleted from the pool.

Post processing should be limited to levels, curves, contrast and minor colour and saturation adjustments. Images which contain computer generated borders are fine as long as the borders do not intrude too much into the image area.

Invitations
If you like the group and know of others that would, invite them!

Comments (optional)
If you leave a comment on any of the photos in the pool and would like others to know where you found the image, you may optionally copy and paste this simple code:
