About Australian Dodge Phoenix 1960 - 1973
A group for photos relating to the Australian Dodge Phoenix, produced between 1960 and 1973. Submissions are open to anything relating to the Australian produced Phoenix, but not the US Dodge Dart Phoenix.
Submissions can include modern or period photos and advertising material.
Marketed as the flagship of the Australian Chrysler line up, it was eventually replaced by the locally designed Chrysler by Chrysler, built on an extended Australian Valiant platform.
The Phoenix was locally assembled by Chrysler Australia using CKD kits, and we only got four door sedans, (no wagons, coupes or convertibles) All the cars were V8s fitted with automatic transmission.
From 1967 there was a choice of four door pillared sedan and four door hardtop sedan, with the sedan powered by the 318 cubic inch small block V8 and the hardtop powered by the 383 cubic inch big block V8.
In 1969 the Phoenix became the Phoenix 400, the name reflecting that Chrysler Australia chose to assemble only 400 units each of the sedan and hardtop, all individually numbered and with a dash mounted Limited Edition plaque.
There were several distinct series in the Phoenix timeline.
For 1960 and 61 the Phoenix was based on the full sized US Dodge Dart Phoenix.
In 1962 the Dart became an intermediate, and the Australian Phoenix followed. For 1963-64 the mid sized Dodge became the 440 when the Dart name was moved to the new compact range, so the Phoenix was based on the 440.
From 1965 until the final model in 1971 (which were sold into 1973), the Phoenix was based on the full sized Plymouth Fury, with interior trim from the top line US Dodge Monaco.
