About Astrophotography HD Gems

This group is about beautiful photographs of celestial space. It's about astronomy. All images should be suitable for using as high-resolution monitor backgrounds or wallpapers. Photos should represent windows into the Universe.

Photographs should be clear and crisp. Please avoid grainy or streaked objects images. Color is preferred to black and white images. For public images from NASA or other space agencies, please upload the highest resolutions of the image available.

Photographs should not include art or artists conceptions, science fiction, Earthly landscapes (even peripherally, unless shot from space), people, man-made objects, borders, partial photos with black blocks, multiple-section images, composite images showing artificial conjunction of celestial objects, or any text. Please place explanatory information in captions or tags, not in the photograph. Highly technical images, however interesting, that cannot be appreciated by astronomy novices are discouraged.

Simulated colors based on observable data is acceptable, as are composite images from multiple exposures or multiple telescopes of the same region of space. Full or partial computer renderings of celestial objects that are based on the best available data is also acceptable as long as the image appears realistic, and not artistic or for illustration purposes.
