New! Astronomer's Galleries - and how to get your astrophoto gallery shown on the Royal Observatory's planetarium
|
Lots of you have left lovely comments on our 2009 Astronomy Photographer of the Year Flickr gallery, which got us thinking.
Perhaps you'd enjoy more astrophoto galleries. And wouldn't it be great to share them with visitors to the Royal Observatory on our planetarium dome?
So, we've come up with a plan and we'd love to have your help with it.
First, we'd like to introduce Astronomer's Galleries: every month we've lined up a professional astronomer to curate a new astrophoto gallery.
We're kicking off with Dr. Amanda Bauer's beautiful selection called, April Apparitions. Amanda, also known as astropixie, studies galaxies at the University of Nottingham. Take a look and tell us what you think.
Secondly, we'd like to invite you to make your own galleries from photos in the Astronomy Photographer of the Year group. Each month we'll choose one of your galleries to make into a planetarium short feature which will be screened during selected shows at the Peter Harrison Planetarium.
It's easy to make a gallery. To be in with the best chance of having yours displayed here at the ROG, pick a theme that links your photos together, make sure your gallery contains the maximum 18 photos, and, as far as you can, pick photos with large sizes already uploaded to Flickr. Of course, before displaying any galleries on our dome, we'll ask photographer's permissions.
We're looking forward to seeing your selections! Any questions, drop us a line.

Oh, and if you'd like us to feature your gallery, either tell us about it here, or Flickr mail us. Thanks.

New astronomer's gallery: Stories in the stars by Stuart Lynn
We've got another new astronomer's gallery this month, this time from Stuart Lynn who works on the wonderful citizen science project Galaxy Zoo at Oxford University. Stuart's gallery tells a great story about how we look at the stars... be sure to take a look and let him know what you think. We'd also love you to make your own astrophoto galleries and share them with the group. You could even have yours displayed on the ROG planetarium dome.

I'd submit for consideration "The Heavens in Motion" gallery that I've compiled from some of the best star trail shots I've seen to date.

Great gallery - I love star trails! We'd really like to see more group members' galleries too.

Time for another Astronomer's Gallery: A June Journey by Emma Rigby
This month's photo selection takes us on a journey all the way from the Royal Observatory, through the Milky Way and beyond. A big thanks to Emma Rigby for putting this gallery together. Emma is a postdoctoral researcher in the astronomy department at the University of Nottingham, where she studies and catalogues galaxies detected by the Herschel Space Telescope. Enjoy her gallery and if you want to read some more, take a look at her blog too! And please do let us know if you've made a gallery of your own.

July Astronomer's Gallery: The Universe according to now, by Rita Tojeiro
Our astronomer's gallery for July invites you to focus on 'the Universe as it is seen today, and today only, by us right here on Earth.' It was imagined by Rita Tojeiro, a postdoc at the Institute for Cosmology and Gravitation of the University of Portsmouth. Rita is particularly interested in cosmology, structure formation and galaxy evolution.
You can leave comments on Rita's gallery, or share your own gallery in this thread. The Royal Observatory's astronomers liked Brendan Alexander's Time Trip gallery so much, it will be shown as a short in the Planetarium next month.

August Astronomer's Gallery: Temporal, by Stuart Lowe
This is our last gallery for the year. We announce the Astronomy Photographer of the Year winners on Thursday 9 September and the winning photographs will be shown in an exhibition, and as a Planetarium short, at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich.
The Royal Observatory is the home of Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian of the World, making it the official starting point for each new day and year. It's therefore fitting that Stuart's gallery for August reminds us of the importance of time to astronomy.
Stuart writes at Astronomy Blog and makes nifty astronomy websites. Chromoscope shows you the Universe in different colours and LookUP is a search engine for astronomical objects. LookUP actually makes use of our astrotagging standard to return astronomical photographs from this group.
