Museum Meet-Up Photos and More.....

Thanks to everyone who turned out for the museum meet-up. It was a great success and that is because we have such a wonderful community. I hope that those of you that are new to Assigmment: Houston will stick around and participate in our discussions and future assignments (August is Sports so start thinking....). I'd like to thank my helpers Gini (mockbird), Juanita (DeCorazon), Tammy (TxTamz) and Jeremey (jeremey) as well as those people who contacted me with offers of help and were on standby in case I needed you.

For Assignment: Houston you can only put three photos in the pool so pick your three favorites. It is ok if you change your mind before the end of the month, but once August 1st hits you can no longer add museum photos to the pool so make sure to get them in before then. If there are other photos that you are dying to share here is the place to do it. You can also post links to your museum sets, ask questions, tell stories, etc.

Thanks again!

i had a ton of fun!

thank goodness they left the AC on for us :)

click here to see my set

it was really hard to choose my three but i finally ruled out my dinosaurs since you HDR/tripod people did much better than i did with the lighting! and the whole night felt sort of like playing laser-tag -- trying not to accidentally step into anyone's photos!

Many thanks to the folks that organized the event last night. I had a good time. (I spent half of my time looking at the exhibits, half of my time enviously/nervously ogling at the photographic equipment). Hopefully I'll see you all around at the next event.

Also, Sam Houston gave me a little show in front of the museum on my way home:

Mesolite Mesolite
*mineral

I concentrated mostly on the minerals -- I thought it would make the most of the opportunity to use tripod (~10+s exposures, macro at f/32..). I went b&w to force a new perspective, stripped of the colors we normally associate with these minerals, reduced to just structure. My next step is to pull the crystallographic symmetry for each mineral and describe its unit cell.

* really need to be viewed large for best results

it was my pleasure to help work the sign in table, laurie. anytime. it was fun working with gini and juanita, too. i enjoyed putting some flickr names to faces! (skimonster and telwink AND paper-by-design--- nice meeting you guys!)... and seeing familiar faces, too. i wanted to go back and talk with some folks, but once we got inside, it was difficult to find anyone again to chat :). going to austin for work for this week, but hope to get some things loaded soon. cant wait to see all the great shots!

Definitely going to try to go back to the museum. Had a blast yesterday but the crazy headache was not helping with the photography. That's my story, and I'm ... :-)

Thanks for setting up everything and letting us take pictures where we wouldn't normally get a chance to do so! I have a backlog of 400 pictures that I need to edit but I'll post mine later this week.

It had been about 8 years since I had been there. I think the last time I went, I missed out on the bottom floor, just as I did this time. This meet-up was fun...met a lot of folks...look forward to the next meet-up. I need to go back and check out that bottom floor! Thanx again Laurie and Erin!

Thanks again to everyone who came to the HMNS Meetup - I have so enjoyed seeing all the photographs! And thanks as well to those who joined the HMNS group - many of the people at the meetup have returned to shoot again and their photos are amazing!

Something I thought you guys might be interested in: this photographer's essay on why she shoots in science museums started this discussion in the HMNS group - and I'd love to know what interested you all in photographing the science museum. Hope you'll check it out - thanks!
