This week we will all go up in smoke (hehe, yes I know, it’s a bad pun!), as our assignment is Smoke Photography, a very cool form of abstract imagery. So put on your old tie dye, dig out the incense and enjoy!

For a clear and simple description of how to create smoke art photography visit this site:

For an extremely detailed description of the process, try this one. It has a lot of information, anecdotes and wonderful examples:

This is a great video on the subject. Although Gavin uses a flash gun which I’m sure many of us may not have, there are comments from folks that have been successful with other setups.

This Flickr group has great submissions from photograhers at all levels:

Feel free to discuss your favorite photos from other members or things that you discovered during the assignment, after it is closed.

Post your best 1-3 shots in the group pool by Sunday, February 12, 2012 and tag them with assignment52-062012

Only submit photos taken during the week of the assignment.

Photos that do not meet the assignment theme or rules will be deleted from the group pool.

Get creative and have fun!

Great assignment and great links! I haven't done any smoke photography for quite awhile - looking forward to having another go at it.

I did a search on Google and found a surprising number of tutorials that are specific to shooting without external flash - thought I'd share a few of them as I know many of us do not have external flash equipment...

Aw come on ladies, two assignments requiring light in a row? hehehe This is tough stuff on a photographer that shoots with only natural light. True I got last weeks image au natural, but that was after many attempts with light/flash that I trashed. Now here we go again. lol You're killing me here ;)

This could be interesting. Other than my artificial smoke in my smoking gun shot a few weeks ago, I haven't really worked with smoke for photos before.

I've seen some smoke photos that were taken using natural sunlight. If I can find the link to the photos, I'll post them here. But the Flickr photographer I found prevously said she uses her point-n-shoot and natural sunlight against a black background.

Plus there are so many fun things you can do in Photoshop or Lightroom to smoke photos to make them colorful.

Can't wait to see the submissions for this weeks assignment.

I searched and searched but couldn't find the link that provided info about using sunlight for smoke photography.

But I did find this link that provides alternative lighting options for smoke art from the Flickr Smoke Art Group. Some good info about using flashlights and small desk lamps as a lighting source instead of flash units.

Also another good tutorial with lots of info on photographing smoke art.

You are wonderful Kathy, thanks! Unfortunately I either will need to make cigarette smoke or another kind work, as it seems over the years I've developed an allergy to incense. I tried it last night and I'm still miserable; headache, running nose/eyes. It was a rough night to say the least and am on very little sleep. :(

And of course in all my shots while in misery, not one turned out dang it!

- I used a candle for some smoke shots last year - worked pretty well. You'll have to use a snuffer of some kind though, so the smoke isn't too active while you're shooting. I'm sure there are other options too... btw - I did use flash on this - don't remember if it was onboard or off.

Here's one of the ones that I posted:

Maybe try the steam from a boiling teapot or ice in a cold glass cup? Someone else mentioned shooting car exhaust, but not sure about that one :)

and thanks so much for all the extra links and photos. This one is definitely a challenge!

& I don't have a snuffer or a teapot, lol, but thanks ladies for some ideas. For sure I won't be doing anything out side or that has any scent to it. ;)

I must say how much I've learned on this assignment, about shooting smoke photography, but more importantly about the post-processing. This has been quite interesting. I've never done anything like this before.

As we end this week's assignment, I wanted to give everyone a huge applause. Photographing smoke was much more difficult than I thought it would be and although some of us have the proper equipment, many don't. I think we all learned a lot about photography, our cameras and/or post processing, even though it was quite a challenge! Thanks to all for sharing your wonderful images!!
