26 Nov 10 - Anything and everything to do with Asbestos. All types of asbestos and the the products containing asbestos. Mineralogical and Geological as well as the medical consequences of asbestos. Asbestos was once called the Magic Mineral, now it's the Killer Dust.

About ASBESTOS

Asbestos is the generic name for a group of fibrous silicate minerals. There are three main types of asbestos, Crocidolite, Amosite and Chrysotile. The rarer types of asbestos are Anthophylitte, Tremolite and Actinolite

The three most common types of asbestos are often referred to by colour

Blue Asbestos - Crocidolite (Strong blue colour makes identification easy)
Riebeckite

Brown Asbestos - Amosite (Off white pale brown colour)
Amosite

White Asbestos - Chrysotile (White)

Amosite and Chrysotile are the most common types occuring in building materials and other products. Chrysotile by far the most common being used in cement products and textiles. Amosite was mainly used in board materials. Crocidolite is quite rare but it was used in cement products. Crocidolite was even added to Kent Micronite Cigarettes in the 1950s
