About Artifacts and Holdovers
This group is for things nobody would have thought to photograph when the object was "in its prime" or "of the time" -- but now they jump out at us as flashbacks, perhaps.
Share your photos that tell how we are still, in some ways, bound to older stuff; the antiquity around us in daily life.
Specific Examples:
objects that are still 'in situ' (as opposed to on display on a museum) are preferred;
old-school (or old skool) storefronts, well worn newspaper racks or kiosks, an old pneumatic tube system at the bank or the library, paper envelopes, cash, airline tickets, heavy card stock, bakery boxes wrapped in twine, cool old grocery store fixtures, mail chutes in office buildings; flipboard departure signs in train stations (called Solari displays)... even parking ticket validators. "Low tech" ... and photographs of places in which these are used.
No hard & fast rules, but photos that have the following emphasis are better:
Things accidentally found, or accidentally preserved/overlooked.
Objects most people don't notice in passing unless they have "the eye."
Context matters. Farms, for example, are interesting in their own way, but often they consist of rustic buildings and objects in a similarly rustic setting, thus, not really what this group is about. However, a farm in the middle of suburban sprawl might be a good photo for this group. Same with junk yards... one would expect to find relics in a junk yard.
Things used in a commercial setting
Casual sightings that strike you as a little anachronistic
Out of date, but still in use.
Abandoned, but interesting to look at.
Objects or fragments of settings that are disappearing but still in use or disused but not dismantled.
Objects or settings in museums can be good if they are presented well and invoke a sense for what is described here, especially if they make for a good photo.
If you see the interest or beauty in it and you think it is a design, tool or whatever that is being phased out, it is probably a good topic for this group.
