This site is still in BETA mode. Some species have limited or no photos, few tags, or may even be missclassified, but hey, it's a start!

This site is an attempt to build a bi-lingual comprehensive fully searchable multi-image photographic/video online Identification Guide to the reptiles of Hong Kong. This index is a resource containing information and photos (where available) of the 78 species of reptile that you can encounter in Hong Kong. There are 49 native snakes (with 3 others classified as "uncertain status"), 19 native lizards (one further introduced, and one other of "uncertain status"; and 8 Chelonians (Turtles and Terrapins).
Realistically only a fraction of those are normally seen out and about, most of the snakes are nocturnal AND secretive, and quite a few have only been seen once or twice at all! Others, however, are quite common, and others yield themselves to careful, thoughtful and lucky hikers.

THE ARK for HONG KONG REPTILES is meant as both a useful scientific and classification reference, as well as for the layman and hiker who has seen an interesting creature and wants to identify it and/or know more about it. The end goal is to have females, males, juveniles - even eggs - represented as photos, videos and drawings...or any other media - and tagged for easy searching. The pictures are visually exciting, entertaining and show the character and beauty of these extraordinary creatures, as well as clear documentation and close ups/macro for ID purposes.

USING THE ARK: Identification & Search..

The information is presented in two ways:
1)In the "Group Pool" photos/images where individual pictures are stored. All images are tagged. Firstly with its scientific (Latin) name, and its Family name, as well as any known common names. Plus other tags that relate to its behavior, colour, size etc - eg: green or red or venomous or snake or lizard.
2)In "discussion" threads which contain and aggregate data, classification, records, diet/habitat/description information as well as all the images of that particular species collected together. These threads are also "tagged" and are fully searchable.

There are many different ways to use this resource - (asides from just browsing the images and discussion threads that is):

1. If you click on any image (or sometimes link) you are taken to the original source of that photo.
If that is within flickr you then have more ways to enjoy and study the photo...in particular you can:
click on the "all sizes" icon/label which will take you to HUGE JPEG screen filling orginal files size images of the digital photo. this allows you to see scales, tongues, fangs etc in fantastic close-up.
Or click on the "tags" on the right to be taken to all the images relating to that on Flickr
Or click on "more properties" if you want to know more about how or where the picture was taken

You can view all the photos and get information on any particular species by using our hyperlink indexes - below. These are alphabetical lists of reptile names, classified by Family, Order and Suborder, and by Latin name.
There is also an index by common name.
By clicking on the name you will see all the photos we hold of that species.

3. IMAGE SEARCH........use the "SEARCH THIS GROUPS POOL" box situated in the top right hand corner - For images. You can search by any TAG or combination. For example if you type in "green snake" then any images that have those tags will appear on the page.

4. ANIMAL, SPECIES OR IDENTIFICATION SEARCH..........use the "SEARCH DISCUSSIONS" box situated under the discussion threads (normally half way down your screen, or lower). This will then pull up any discussion threads that contain that TAG or combination of TAGS. For example, if you saw a lizard with a red throat you type in "lizard red" and it will pull up any discussion threads with that combination. Simply click on the thread to be taken to all the information that we have on that animal. This also works for the classifications, orders and suborders....for example "Colubridae" will yield all snake species of that family.
