Hi :)

thanks everyone who replied to my other thread!!:))
I so want to get into this fish hobby, but with all my back luck, im quickly turning sour :(

I went to another aquarium place today and they said just stick to plaites and mollys till i get everyhing worked out....altho it was a plaite that died!! not the original one tho:)

They also said to bring in a sample of water from the tank and they will run some more tests, that we probably haven't done :)
They might be able to see whats going on.\
Our tanks has been set up for a couple ofmonths now.
we also got a stronger pump today.

Next question..........
The molly i got the other day..has been really been over active and stir crazy...is this normal ,,am i not feeding it enough and its starving??!!
as im paranoid bout over feeding now
ive been taught the right amount so i dont think its that
Is it normal for Mollys to be so frenzied and hyperactive??
My plaite isn't...

thanks again xx
so is that a sign of something????

ps..i'll get back on a fish forum soon as i need so much help!!
just that i dont know whether to keep at it, or give up , with fish altogether.

Sounds like your Molly is suffering from stress. Mollys need more salinity in the tank than some other fish, that could be one of the problems. There are treatments that can be added to the water that help with stress. Try not to disturb them too much for a few days. It sure sounds to me like there is something wrong with the water, either too much of a chemical, not enough oxygen, or something. Hopefully they will find something in the sample you provided. Do the fish show any signs of disease like white spots or fungus? I only buy fish from a few trusted sources. Many aquarium stores overcrowd their tanks and wind up selling you diseased and stressed fish. A good ratio of fish should be 1 or 2 per gallon.

Have to agree with Dean; it does sound like there's something wrong with your water. I assume it is not one of the common beginner's problems such as not dechlorinating the water when filling the tank or changing water, not filtering, or overfeeding.
In addition to the things a decent fish store should be able to determine, there are a few things people occasionally get into their aquariums, either by accident or because they are unaware that it is bad for the fish, such as detergents, handlotion, or other household chemicals.
I can not tell you how many people I have known or heard of who cleaned their tanks using strong detergents. That was what they used for other cleaning jobs, so they didn't think about it poisoning the fish, but it does. Just washing your hands with soap and then reaching into the tank without rinsing very thoroughly first can be bad.
Same goes for cleaning near the tank, particularly using spray detergents or cleaning rags/sponges dripping with wash water.
And the young woman who wanted to protect her hands and covered them with thick layers of hand lotion before cleaning her tank, and reapplied it throughout the job is a classic. Many of the chemicals in hand lotion and other personal care products can be toxic to fish.
Another thing many people do is clean the tank too thoroughly by changing out all or a large portion of the water at once, or to use distilled water when filling it up. Too much charcoal in the filter, or changing it too often can also be a problem because it removes too many of the minerals and dissolved gases that the fish need to live.
And as if that wasn't enough, particularly if the aquarium is relatively small, if it is close to a source of heat, exposed to strong sunlight, or high heat for other reasons, the water may become depleted of oxygen because of the heat.
I don't know if any of these things may apply to your aquarium, but it may be worth it thinking about what may have come in contact with the water.

If you do decide to add a little salt to your water, don't make my beginner's mistake and add the salt right to the water. Make sure you have aquarium salt, and then disslove the salt in some water *before* you add it to the tank.

I had a lovely chocolate pleco (the sucker fish you also have), but the poor fish swam over the salt pile I stupidly put in there and got a chemical burn from the salt and died :-(

Good luck!

You might also want to look at your equipment before you add salt!!!!!
Salt water will deystroy any equipment with metal parts. Saltwater aquraium equipment does not contain metal parts, you might want to look at your manual of that expensive pump you have just purchased.

Mollies live in different areas to platies even tho they are of the same genus, but i wouldnt add salt, sailfin mollies are different they are def esturine fish that require salt but i have kept normal pet store mollies in acidic water, ph 6.5 and they were most happy.

Good luck, A.
