affecting images of people which could loosly be defined as "portraits," though . . . perhaps not.
more than just the person in the photograph, i believe that the level of emotional charge contained in a portrait has also to do with some technical elements (whether 'traditionaly' correct or not). do pay attention to:
light,
depth of field,
value,
hue,
contrast,
grain(?),
and all the other basic elements of composition (traditional and non).
