Why do photographers choose Macs over PCs?
|
I hear this a lot, but just wanted to get your opinions or feedback?
I happened to get my first Macbook Pro before getting serious about photography so it kinda just worked out for me, but I hear friends and other people saying "If you're serious about Photography, get a MAC!"

Because Macs are better. Specifically, they are much better suited to multimedia and graphics than a PC, and while you may be able to get a 15 inch PC laptop for $500, you would end up paying well over the $2,000 that a MacBook Pro costs for a PC laptop with the same high end parts and features plus the cost of ownership, and it certainly wouldn't be as portable or well designed as a MacBook Pro.

I wouldn't believe that. Mac are just built of standard hardware. Nothing you could not buy to build a windows pc. The operating system shouldn't matter, too, you're doing your work with applications, not an os. Most relevant applications can be had for both, windows and os x.
The quote should say "If you're serious about photography, get a camera!"

I have to agree with that quote, mbecher. I mainly shoot film, so I don't really do anything photography related on my Mac, other than upload pictures to Flickr, and that can be done with any computer.
But I do disagree with you about operating system and software, at least in my field, which is film and animation. There are several industry standard video editing and animation programs that are not available on PC, the most obvious one being Final Cut, which is quickly becoming the standard in the industry. The stability of the operating system is also very important, if the computer keeps crashing it is not very useful, is it?
I guess I didn't phrase my comment very well either. While it is true that you can buy a PC with the high end hardware similar to the MacBook Pro, the advantage of owning a Mac is the fact that Apple designs their computers and operating systems around a very limited set of quality hardware components, meaning that every part of the computer works together flawlessly, without all of the bugs and drivers that infest PCs.

Don't get me wrong. I love my mac. And I'd always recommend one to a newbie. If I only had the money, I'd go out now to buy another one. But I never had any trouble with my pc running xp, too. I can't tell one is more stable than the other.
Driver issues on a pc are usually had on very fresh hardware and get fixed soon. And Apple usually has some of these, too.
Also, for serious work, there is just one Mac in the line: the Mac Pro. All those iMacs and Laptops are rather limited when it comes to RAM expansion, harddrive speed and display quality. All of which are crucial for postprocessing.

For me it's the workflow. I like my desktop clean and clutter free. Also, I want my OS ready to go out the box. When I first bought my Mac, I was sold on the idea of using OS9 on OSX Mac. So I can flip back and forth. 7yrs later I stiill do that on one of my Macs.
I like the software packaged in a Mac. I have both XP and OSX but I prefer editing pics and running my business on a Mac. I hate using my HD space for extra Apps.

I like it because it is has more editing options and you can post your shot directly to Flickr nad do everything from there.

Macs had a GUI long before Windows did so the first image editing apps were made for Macs, and for many generations afterwards the Mac versions of Photoshop etc ran better because the Windows ones were a port off the Mac codebase
this is how the continuing tradition of the Mac as the designers / editors / photographers computer began

For the same reason that some people buy (for example) Canon L lenses, instead of a cheaper alternative. They appreciate good design, workmanship, fine quality in the tools that they use every day (or very frequently). Working with quality tools makes the job go easier and more quickly.

Hardly anybody believes me when I say this, but when I bought my MacBook Pro last year it was the cheapest laptop I found that met my requirements. Really, Apple hardware isn't more expensive than other high end hardware.
(OK, one of my requirements was that I must not be required to buy any Microsoft software with my laptop, and I expected it to be as durable as my Powerbook. Those are killer requirements!)
