Every year at the beginning of June, traveling folk gather at Appleby in Westmorland to buy and sell horses.
The highlight of the weekend is the washing of horses in the river in the middle of the village.
The event sometimes gets bad press but in the 3 years that I have been attending I would say the majority of horses appear to be healthy and well looked after.
