New Contest: Blood in the Snow

view profile

[Carter] is a group administrator [Carter]  Pro User  says:

Some say the world will end in fire, but I say it will end in ice.

The goal of this contest is to depict the end of the world as it is crushed beneath a new ice age. The catalyst is up to you, whether it's nuclear winter, the sun slowly burning out, or any other circumstance. The point is, everything's all snowy all of a sudden.

So how do people react? Do children build snowmen from ash-streaked snow under a grey sky? Do the last ragged remnants of society huddle around a fire in the lifeless wastes? Do former businessmen go skiing past their old places of work in the canyons of a former metropolis?

There's no prescription for theme or style, but a major component of the scores will be based on originality. We've all seen heavily outfitted super-troopers marauding around, bashing in the skulls of zombies. Let's try something a bit different.

The rules, in handy bullet-point form!
-Entry must be at least 16x16 studs.
-Due by midnight, March 31st.
-Snowy.

Judges are Robby and myself.

Prizes!
First Place:
You get a trophy!

Blood in the Snow by [Carter]

Second Place:
An assortment of Brickarms, including prototypes and special colors, generously donated by Will Chapman!

Third Place:
Also an assortment of Brickarms, but not as awesome as what second place gets.

Now get building!

Ooh! Very exciting! I haven't built anything apocalego in quite some time.
It'll give me an excuse to actually make time to build something with my hectic schedule.

My entry, my first apocalego so cut me some slack, but honestly tell me how I did.

"Uh control, what the hell am I looking at?"
Every year a group of scientists come from the underground colony "Refuge" to see if any of the snow has melted. This year it still has not. But the scientists have made a strange discovery, a lifeforms that does not require food it gets nutrients from the sun. This life form was presumed extinct 590 years ago.

view photostream

[Carter] is a group administrator [Carter]  Pro User  says:

To answer some questions;

No height limit, and no outer size limit. It just has to have a footprint over 16x16 studs.

One entry per person, but you can change your entry if you build something later that you like more.

Still talking to Will, first place may get a prize beyond just the trophy.

Brickarms are allowed (as I hope would be implied from having them in the trophy and distributing them as prizes). Please reread the rules for any clarification regarding conflict, enemies, etc. It's laid out pretty clearly.

Note*

For the purpose of keeping this thread cleaner and shorter, can we keep the "this sounds cool," "i might have to try this," and other frivolous posts to a minimum? I just remember looking at the old 3 page contest threads where the vast majority of the posts were pointless.

EDIT:

Begun cleaning out some posts, nothing personal, they are just unnecessary.

Kirk0007 says:

I'd like to enter this one. I've always had a hatred of snow that cuts down to my basic sense of life. Snow is a stopper on all productivity, and cold is a stopper on life itself. Winter, coldness, and snow, are all very deep themes and I hope I (as well as the others who enter) will be able to produce a creation that does the theme justice and shows a bit of symbolism.

Yes, that is allowed.

For the people who already uploaded entries, the idea was to take time and build high quality entries, that's why we gave you until March 31.

Also, a dio is required(16x16 at least)

@Edborstein: That's fine, as long as the emphasis remains on snow/frigidity. Creativity trumps straight and narrow contest regulations.

@Big gunner: No reason why not, but remember that the largest component here is originality.

@Diego: if it successfully conveys the idea of apocalypse, I don't see why not. If it just looks like any other castle scene, except maybe a little more dismal, then you're not going to have a great shot at winning. Originality is paramount here.

@Rogue Pyro: editing programs are fine.

I noticed a few people now have posted entries that are a few figs posed in real snow, without a dio. I don't think those qualify, but I'm not sure. Just putting this out there, so no one gets there hopes dashed by a last minute disqualification.

Perhaps one of the judges could clarify?

There are arctic areas without snow as well, say a high-altitude wind-blown rock desert, perhaps with patches of snow. I guess it takes some thought to convey the cold, though. Maybe go for all cold hues for the ground, then make whatever is the focus have one or more warm hues.

I'm ashamed of the picture quality here, but hopefully it will suffice for the curious. First place is the row on the left, followed by second in the center and third on the right. Bayonets are in groups of five.

If you want to thank Will Chapman for his generosity in providing these, go spend some money at BrickArms!
