Contest Ideas

That Lego Kid is a group administrator That Lego Kid says:

Does anyone have a good idea for a good contest that would fit with the Post-Apoc theme? And isn't Just " Post-Apoc Dio Contest" or "Post-Apoc Vehicle Qontest." So try to find a good, creative contest idea that fits in the Post-Apoc theme.

*READ!!*
When a contest idea is presented, you can post your opinion on it or make suggestions to the presenter for awhile. If the idea gathers support, it will be added to this post in the IDEAS section. When someone is cleared to host a contest, they will be free to select an idea of their choice.

*IDEAS*

"The Menagarie of Mutated Monstrosities!"

The Goal:
Design an animal or creature adapted to, mutated by, or born from its Apocalyptic surroundings. You control the evolution!

"The Origins of the Apocalypse"

The Goal:
You make the place where the apocalypse first happened. Build the big red button that launched the nukes, or the lab where some careless fig dropped a vial of the worlds worst contagion? Or the rift where a bunch of black fanatasy critters swarmed through, Or the first contact with alieans that went oh so horribly wrong. Anything goes, from Asteroids to Zombies.

"Is Anyone Out There?"

The Goal:
Depict a survivor's/ group of survivors struggle with the loneliness of post-apoc life and their attempts to find and communicate with other survivors. Is a clan attempting to raise a radio tower? Maybe a talented survivor is fiddling with an old 2-way radio. Or is the reborn government listening for distress signals?

"Last Stand"

The Goal:
Build a vignette or diorama showing a survivors last stand against overwhelming odds! Do your heroes , vastly outnumbered, go down fighting? Can the survivors hold off mutants long enough to get their vehicle fixed and escape? Will they prevail? or will this indeed be their final stand!

"Divine Intervention"

The Goal:
Draw inspiration from various religious texts to create an apocalypse of divine origins. Will fire pour from the Heavens? or perhaps the earth itself will swallow sinners whole!

"Monumental Disaster"

The Goal:
Take an iconic location, and show either how survivors have utilized it either for home, for a battleground, burial ground, etc., OR show how the Apocalypse affected it, "no survivors" style..

"Take to the Trees"

The Goal:
Ravening radioactive wolves got you down? Rivers of toxic sludge putting a cramp in you’re style? Take heart my friend and don’t head for the hills…take to the trees! Or the rooftops. Or that watertower on the edge of town. Build an MOC illustrating post-apoc life high above the hazards infesting the surface. Any scenario is fair game as long as it’s elevated and inaccessible to the wandering zombie hordes. And anyway, you’ve always wanted to build your own apocalyptic Ewok village…haven’t you?

"Oh, How the Mighty Have Fallen"

The Goal:
Build an MOC incorporating a famous person and show how their life changed after the apocalypse. Michael Jackson in his Wonderland Ranch wasteland…Bill Gates, vainly trying to reboot a Vista running PC amid the ruins of Microsoft’s corporate headquarters…George Lucas, insane and wandering, hallucinating about stormtroopers and gungans around every corner… This is your chance to take that ***hole movie star, politician, rock idol etc. down for good by throwing them into a puddle of radioactive goo. Or, maybe it’s not all bad for some of our favorite celebs…mutant Elvis lording over a zombie filled Graceland anyone?

"Apocalypse of the Mind"

The Goal:
The end of the civilized world no doubt places certain strains on one’s psyche. Starvation, isolation, loss of loved ones, and a thousand other things that could serve to push someone over the edge, mentally. Build an MOC that illustrates the nightmares/hallucinations of a person driven mad by the apocalypse and the specific issues they face. A starving man, dreaming of a banquet laid before him, but chained to the chair, unable to partake in the feast… A lonely wanderer, surrounded by phantoms of those who he lost, so close, but always just out of reach… A coward, haunted by the specter of the child he refused to save from a burning building… Unleash your inner Nannan and get weird, post-apoc style!

"Apocalypse Avoidance 101"

The Goal:
Everyone knows the story of Superman, and how his father, Jor-El placed his infant son aboard a homemade rocket ship that flew him to safety during the final moments of Krypton’s cataclysmic demise. Well, now it’s your turn. Assuming we saw the apocalypse coming, build an MOC showing the steps taken to escape it’s effects. Rocket to the stars or utopian vault deep underground, as long as it’s avoiding the apocalypse and not just learning to live with it’s effects.

"New World Order"

The Goal:
I think most people will agree that the apocalypse ain’t gonna be pretty. Given enough time however, a new world could potentially rise from the ashes of the old, and civilization could begin again. Build an MOC showing this new post-post-apoc society built on the bones of the old. What things are different and what is essentially the same. How did the legacy of the apocalypse shape this new world and what dangers may still linger on…

"End of an Era"

The Goal:
Maybe the world never made it this far. Depict an Apocalyps in history. Any era other than the modern day will do. Ancient Egypt, Feudal Japan, Renaissance Europe, WWI…you get the idea. Make an MOC showing the results of an apocalypse that took place during a specific time or place in history.

"I <3 the Apocalypse"

the Goal:
Most post-apoc builds tend to be fairly negative affairs. Maybe it’s not all bad however, or at least not for everyone. Maybe that New York homeless dude is now an apocalyptic warlord, controlling all of lower Manhattan. Maybe that severely abused housewife is now a happy widow, living off the land, free to go where she will. Build an MOC showing how some situation is actually better off following the apocalypse.

"Faith After the World Has Ended"

The Goal:
What do people believe in after the Apocalypse? Do modern-day Mayans sacrifice prisoners to make the sun come back after the sky is permanently darkened? Do fringe fanatics sacrifice themselves to zombies in the belief that the undead are divine retribution? Do death-cults of Cthulthu carry out His dread work in the hope that they are devoured first?

"The Apocalypse Never Happened"

The Goal:
Build a vig/dio of a person/persons who are blissfully ignorant of the carnage and destruction that has gone on around them. Make a queue at a cash register where the cashier has been burnt to a crisp, make children swimming in a pond with floating bodies and random oil spills, build a scene of a man stuck in traffic on his way to work, and all the other cars are totaled, the possibilities are endless!

"Alone in a dead world"

The Goal:
You are the sole survivor of the apocalypse! Whether you are entirely alone, the last non-zombified human, or the last sane person on the planet, your enemies and challenges are many. Your options have dwindled to hide in fear, succumb to insanity, join your enemies, or fight against the them and survive!

"Every Man For Himself!"

The Goal:
You have created a sanctuary against the horrors of the apocalypse, but now, out of jealousy, your fellow survivors attempt to take it from you! Will your defenses hold against your own kind? Will that AA gun for the giant predatory birds stop salvaged tanks? Does your treetop home, away from the zombies, have floors that keep you safe from traitors' bullets from below?

"And the Wolf shall lie down with the Lamb."

The Goal:
After the apocalypse, getting food won't mean a quick trip down to the grocery store. Its gonna get a LOT more complicated. Show survivors struggle to find food, or not to become food. It could be a group of suvivours hunting for food, or being stalked by Zombies. A group of rag-tag Daemon hunters could be closing in on their quarry. Anything you deem cool and Adrenaline pumping.

"Celebrating a New Beginning"

The Goal:
Build a scene long after the apocalypse has ended and the world has pieced itself back together. Depict the peoples' joyous celebration of the establishment of a new world order, the signing of a treaty to end the wars, or the defeat of a great enemy. Or a more solemn event to remember the countless victims of the Apocalypse and origanally took hold on the world. Maybe the world had learned from the mistakes of the past and become an eco-friendly anti-war society!

Tayasuune's idea'll work. Looking round Flickr, there aren't any MOC's like that. But, you could really broden the idea by combining it with another. Liike, for example, Make a Post-Apocalyptic Clan to tell the story of how the end came about. As in, you could start off having the leader telling the story around the campfire, and then have the pictures of your 'End of the World' scene being voiced over by him. Just an Idea :-)

Honestly Brian, I dig just about every one of those ideas. I feel like the problem with a lot of the ideas submitted so far is that they're more of the same; ideally, a contest should give people incentive to take a theme in new and different directions.

If I may submit one of my own;

Faith After the World Has Ended-

What do you guys reckon? Is it time for a new contest?
And I'll probably think of a couple o' idea's too ;-)

EDIT: Ok, I got a few ideas;
'They said that a Hero would save us...'
The Goal:
To create a scene where a leader or important figure is killed during or after the Apocalypse, by some force.
It could be a world Leader being eaten by a Black fantasy creature, or the founder of a Post-Apocaliptic city being malled by zombies. Did Demons break through to Jack Thompson and consume his tiny, ignorant mind? Let's hope so. Remember, you can have any important figure you like, but they must be being, or about to be killed.
The gory the better in this case.

'And the Wolf shall lie down with the Lamb.'
The Goal:
In this contest, hunting is the name of the game. It could be a group of suvivours hunting for food, or being stalked by Zombies. A group of rag-tag Daemon hunters could be closing in on their quarry. Anything you deem cool and Adrenaline pumping. This should be a great contest, and also a chance to use your imagination...

I was thinking more of a modern/ultramodern apocalypse, with a boat theme. Build floating sanctuaries for the survivors, not necessarily pirates.

Im liking this water theme. And horati0 pirates can still be modern. Its actually way cooler cause you have just normal boats with with cool AB guns! (anti-boat guns)

I think that you can't really claim to have an interest in post-apocaloptic themes and not have heard of Waterworld. Do some research people! Sure, the movie kinda sucked (actually I liked it, am I the only one?) but it's a wealth of water based post-apoc stuff.

Proudlove: Nathan, you gotta remember the movie came out in 1995. 13 years ago some of these builders were still crawling around in diapers ;) And I liked it too (not just for Jeanne Tripplehorn) I look at it strictly on the merits of an action movie (and overlook the many plot holes) and on that basis, it's got decent action for a "Mad-Max-on-H2O-clone". Dennis Hopper is a hoot as the over the top villain. (just try not to think about how Mariner got his gills... oh, the evolution debates THAT will start)

Bah, it was a freakin' horrible movie as far as stories go, but it's still some cool inspiration for the likes of us. Worth watching for that fact at least. Just be careful to leave any semblance of a scientific mind at the door.

Garbageman, I see what you mean. I guess my head's too wrapped around the recent pirate craze.

The point of contests is to encourage people to do things they wouldn't ordinarily do; otherwise, what's the point in giving people a prize for making more boilerplate?

On another note, it seems a little unnecessary to chime in with what contests you like or don't like. These ideas are here to get the creative juices flowing, and to give a variety of options to the hosts of the next contest, not to be voted for or against.
Posted 58 months ago. (permalink)

tadashistate  Pro User  says:

I thought the point was to state your opinion on the ideas, isn't that what this was started for. That way the hosts can decide which ones are popular, inventive, etc.

That Lego Kid is a group administrator That Lego Kid says:

Actually, the main point of this thread is to make more Ideas for contests, as Carter said. Ultamently, the person who decides to step up and host gets to choose. Though pointing out your opinion is fine, in moderation. Once you've said what you like, or don't like, there is no need to repeat.

In the post-apocalyptic world, patience is not only a virtue, it can mean the difference between life and death. In the Lego world, it is assuaged by the fact that you can build without the external stimulus of a contest.

Plus, contests require judges and willing donors of money/bricks. It'll happen when such come forward.

Hey, I've got one more idea!! = D

That Brick Science contest involves making impulse-like sets, doesn't it? Well, what if we had a ApocaLego one, where you had to make a 20-30 piece entry. Have 3 different types, Zombie, Survivors, and a Battlepack, with 100 pieces at the most! Or something like that.

Just spit-balling really, but I thought it might be worth posting. Fiddle around with the idea if you like it! If someone already suggested this, then sorry, I didn't know. I don't remember any ideas similar to this.

Remeber the Apocalypse/The new world

Build a scene placed in a timeframe long after the apocalypse is over and the world has peiced itself back together. A celebration, perhaps, of people parading the streets to honor the day when the Apocalypse origanally took hold on the world. Or maybe, depict how the world had learned from the mistakes of the past and become an eco-friendly anti-war society.

No, I didn't add the pirate idea. While it was a good idea for a contest, i felt it just wasn't up to creative "par" for the list. No offense to you. I even removed some of my own ideas after realizing they weren't up to my own standard.
Hell on the Highway" (one of my own ideas) was removed because it was really a basic contest with a cool name. I had, in the original post stated that very basic ideas would not be accepted. While your Pirate contest would work, it's very basic at its core.

In summary, we're going for contests that have a unifying idea, but could have radically different entries. Look at the winners for the Picking up the Pieces contest. A cave , a windmill and a bridge. In your contest, everyone would most likely end up building boats or rafts.
