I'm having a problem with downloadr. I tried to search for my username and it says it cant find me. Not sure if I'm using it right. I'm just searching under Search>Username. Any help would be appreciated as I've got 3000 photos to get off flickr! Eek!

Strange things again...suddenly there are many user names (like emily1983 above) that say "username not found".... and still others that are found but inexplicably do not allow you to download any photos at all...while others (like janten for example) seem to work fine. This seems to have happened recently.

That a name can't be found means, in most cases, that the user has his profile hidden from searches, which seems to be the case with emily1983; she can't be found in Flickr's people search either.

@emily:
You may try the following (I have no idea if it really works): Authenticate yourself via Extras/Authenticate and then use Extras/Full Backup and see if that downloads your photos.

*sigh* It's folks like you that are causing Flickr to be much more quick to pull API keys completely.
If anything, Downloadr will have to start complying with the API TOS, which means you'll only be able to download your own images, and images that the photographer has allowed your account to download.

If you have the time, perhaps you could consider a request.
Sometimes when I'm looking for a person or a group, the wrong person or group is found - Flickr's search function is kind of wonky and this happens if two or more people have similar names.
Could you add an option to override the name with the nsid of the person or group? Then, if I get the wrong result I could use the correct nsid instead. It would certainly help in a few awkward cases.
Thanks.

PROGRAM IMPROVEMENT
First of all, this program helps me a lot. Therefore, thank you for creating this program. However, I really hope that you could add 1 more option in the "extra, settings" --> "do not download existing files".
I find it is very annoying that the downloaded files will be downloaded one more time when I choose "overwrite existing files instead renaming" . Similarly, when I uncheck it, the same files will be downloaded one more time by renaming them. The program can't skip the files that have been downloaded previously.
Secondly, I also hope that you could add "Favourites" just like IE's Favourites so that I could save the links that I have browsed earlier together with the users, sets or tags.
Thirdly, it is so wonderful if you could add the options for the image size ("small", "medium", "large", "original") so that we could select the size that we really want.
Finally, just in case, if you could add an option "auto shutdown computer upon download completion" so that the computer can be shut down automatically once all files have been downloaded. This could save the energy especially in the hike of petrol prices all over the world.
Thanks....

I just updated the tool once again. It should now be TOS-compliant (at least I think). Since I do not really know which photos I am allowed to download and which not you will only be able to download your own photos and pictures that meet both of the following criteria:
a) License is not "all rights reserved"
b) Candownload is "1" (i.e. the user has not prohibited downloads of his images)
You will notice that you now are not even able to download some pictures that you can get via "All Sizes"/"Download original size" and thus downloadr will be quite useless at the moment. I already mailed flickr about the issue and hopefully I will release a new version soon that only checks for criteria b), but until I hear from flickr this is the only save solution.
The new build also features some minor bugfixes, especially related to "try to get all photos".

janten "not even able to download some pictures that you can get via "All Sizes"/"Download original size" "
If they are all rights reserved, it doesn't matter what the download button says. The person would still need to get permission from the owner before they download.
If you check for only b), you will often not be in compliance with the TOS.

Well, the right to download a photo is obviously not reserved if the author allows anyone to do so at the flickr homepage. It makes no sense at all that the right to download a photo, which is nothing more than storing the data of a given URL to the local hard disk, should depend on where you got this URL.
I'd think that "all rights reserved" means "watch it, download it, do nothing else with it". If someone wants to allow other users to only watch his photos then he would set the permissions to "all rights reserved" and "forbid downloading of this photo". Otherwise it would be impossible to allow users to download but not use my pictures since such a license is not available on flickr.
It even says so on the CC page of flickr:
You can associate a Creative Commons license with your content if you wish, to grant people the right to use your work under certain circumstances.
I think that you do not use photo if you simply download it. The licenses are all about the right to use the photo for (non-)commercial work, making derivates of it, publishing it elsewhere etc. If you check the CC-licenses you will notice that everyone of them at least allows other people to re-publish the photo if they attribute the original photographer, so if you do not want people to re-publish your photo you are left with no other option than "All rights reserved", but this does not include that you do not want other people to store local copies of your photo.

@Patrick:
I am pretty sure that I can include them into the EXIF-Data somehow. Just need to look up the right fields to use. I will have a look at that in the next days.
@Jane:
Short answer: No.
Long answer: There are still some old versions of downloadr on the net and you could stop the auto-updates by blocking all communications to janten.com, using your favorite firewall and then you would have to get downloadr running even if the update fails. But then again it should be a lot simpler to just write your own tool...

I have already received an answer from flickr and they will see if it is really necessary to check the license for every photo, so there is still hope. I am pretty sure that in the end it will only block photos where downloading has been explicitly disabled by the author, which are very few, instead of all non-CC'ed photos, which is almost every picture on flickr.

Hi guys, I have a question: Why can't I find the user "el estratografico" when searching for him via Downloadr or Flickr? He has an account:
www.flickr.com/photos/elestratografico/sets/
So why doesn't he show up? I've also tried it without the "el" and without the space, but both Flickr and Downloadr can't find him. Neither can Grabbr for Mac.

If he hasn't given you permission to download, then you won't be able to find him. If an image is All Rights Reserved you need permission from the photographer to use it.
Many people on Flickr hide their photos from searches because too many people were downloading without permission.

When I select 100 photos, I'm lucky if I can download 2 of them. The rest fail. There is no option to only display ones that you are allowed to download.
This used to be a great program, but I don't think there's any point in using it anymore :(
I used to put up with the constant crashes and uncaught .net exceptions because it was so useful... but now it doesn't even have that.

jmoliver: I have heard back from flickr, but I do not have any good news right now. The thing is, that only people who are explicitly allowed to download photos that are "all rights reserved" should be able to do so with downloadr. If you make your photos avaiable to "Friends and/or Family" then that is indeed the case but I have yet to find a way to check this using the flickr API without sending a new request for each photo (the new rules already forced me to do twice as many calls as before).
I will contact flickr again and ask them for support.
Ozzah_84:
The problem is basically the same here. I could check if the photos are avaiable before I display them so I could hide the ones that are not, but this causes one additional API request (to get the license) for every photo, regardless it it is downloadable or not. If I did that, I would hit the limits quite fast and therefore I have no idea how to implement such a feature. Sorry for that.

@janten: First of all, thanks for making this program, it's so far the only one that has worked with my pictures, and the metadata thing is great!
As of the Flickr TOS, I think the license limitation should be for other users' pictures, not for my own. I don't need a CC license to use my own pictures, they are mine already!. are you sure that is how it's supposed to work?

Usernames with spaces seem to work very bad with the flickr API. You can however just type in your NSID instead. For Sir Loin this would be 96785691@N00 (you can copy it out of your photostream's url).

Wil this back up an entire account, including notes, tags, and comments?
Since flickr has been arbitrarily deleting friends' of mine accounts, accounts which had slowly been built up over years, I want to make sure I won't lose the years of comments notes and tags from friends and family for being outspoken against flickr's ridiculous, heavy handed policies.

Excellent suggestion. All these downloader apps could become CC Photo-finding tools if they handled the license structures properly. I'm sure it would make the ARR folks happier too.

From the comments above, it sounds like this program is supposed to save the tags to the file. I tried it out, and it's not doing that. I used exiftool (among others) to examine the downloaded file, and there's no trace of the caption, headline, or tags.
Any ideas? I'm trying to find a tool that will let me download my images along with the headline, caption, and tags so that I can re-upload them to other sites without having to redo the tagging. (I like using Flickr's interface to caption my photos instead of kludgy offline tools).

Has anyone run into the error:
"Finished download of 0 phots. 1 images were skipped. This could be because the files already existed or you did not have the rights to download them. Show folder?"
The interface still finds/displays the image previews, but this error occurs whenever I select any pictures for download.
Any suggestions?

I will not "correct" it, as it is not an error. Most people on flickr do set their license to "All Rights Reserved" and therefore you are not allowed to download their photos. I personally think that this is not what most people have in mind when setting thei rights, but that is what flickr says and I cannot change it. Sadly the "candownload"-Tag still isn't reliable so my safest bet is blocking all downloads of ARR'd photos. Downloadr is still a useful app as long as you keep the "Creative Commons" checkbox checked.

Could anyone tell me if all Windows XP PCs have been updated to .NET RE 3.0 (or 3.5)? The new .NET has better support for EXIF tags, but I do not want to brake Downloadr for a lot of users just because of a litte feature.

Great work on such a wonderful program.... makes me more comfortable in these troubling days with the economy the way its and how unstable yahoo is.
Btw flickr user entered data (Tags and such) is not saved to EXIF and IPTC on Windows 7 RC... I'd be happy to test builds that may fix that.
Also id say 3.5 is pretty well standard at this point.
One more point..... the data is only saved to supporting file types eg jpg but not png.

I am on Windows 7 RC myself, and the data is stored there. You can verify using IrfanView, for example. I do not know why Windows itself does not show the information, but I will have a look into it. My best guess at the moment is that Windows may use special EXIF tags that are different from the standard ones.

Great App Janten!
You could make your audience broader by adding a "guest pass" downloading ability, do that I could send your program to non-flickr users toguether with a guest pass so that they could download my sets more easily.
For now I'm asking them to become Flickr users, but you know, people are lazy. :)
Loving the app!

Is there a way to download images with the location data in the exif when you add the location from chosing its location via the map tool? I would like to download some images and play with them in lightroom, but i have noticed that lightroom doesn't know where the images were taken even though I added them to the map via flickr's map tool.

Janten: "Well, the right to download a photo is obviously not reserved if the author allows anyone to do so at the flickr homepage.

I think that you do not use photo if you simply download it. ----
This is exactly how I understand this. Has there been any official word from Flickr that specifically states that we cannot download ARR photos via their API?
This discussion is the first I've heard of this "Candownload" property (or whatever it is). Flickr legaleze doesn't mention it, the Flicker.NET doc doesn't seem to mention it. I'm not sure if I can easily search all of the Flicker API doc to search for it. What is this thing?
Anyway, I am writing an app as an exercise to learn C# that downloads images from Flickr, and am trying to figure out all this silliness.
Another question I have concerns this Flickr requirement: "[I]f a user marks a photo as 'private' after using your service, your application must reflect those changes as soon as reasonably possible. If your application has any cached copies of photos that have become 'private,' you must remove as soon as reasonably possible."
It seems to properly implement this, since Flickr does not appear to tell me that a given photo is private (I think I can only get an IsPublic == 0 if I am authenticated to the account, i.e., it's my own account), I would need to store the PhotoID in the filename of every photo I download (or otherwise associate it to the deletable filename), and if I run my app again, I have to check everything I've ever downloaded to see if it still exists on the Flickr servers, and if not, delete it. This is to say the least, absolutely ridiculous. As it turns out, I do keep a database of downloaded photos and their filenames, but only as a way to skip already-downloaded photos.
The thing is, photos may disappear not only because the owner marked them as private, but also because they simply deleted them for whatever reason. In the latter case, am I to assume that a photo was deleted because the user wants to hide it from the world, or just decided to clean out their account and they don't care if it's still out there? Flickr only refers to a "user marks a photo as 'private'", which does not necessarily include photo deletion, which is not photo marking. Since Flickr never seems to return information for private photos for unauthenticated users in searches (as opposed to merely disallowing their actual download), and certainly doesn't return photo information indicating a photo that once existed is now deleted, I really cannot comply to the letter of Flickr's stated requirements. The effective requirement that my app has to compare every file it has ever downloaded from Flickr with the current contents of Flickr every time I run it smacks of insanity. Can you imagine the number of hits I'd have to make on that site just to comply with this?

Hi, I'd appreciate you made this great software!
I wonder if there is any way to search photos by the most interesting or most relevant, as provided by flickr search?
Current downloadr can search photos by upload time and taken time. I think it will be great to add more search options.
Once again, this app is really my favorite. Thank you!

The errors are Unhandled exception errors and state that an existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Anybody got any ideas?

I am currenty recoding the complete download handler, this may fix the error described by jcbazemore. This also allows for better metadata support (Windows titles etc.). If you want do help me, download the beta here and report any errors. Thank you!

Downloadr keeps crashing while it is downloading somewhere between 8,500 and 12,000 preview images, because it is taking so long I let it sit as I go and do other things and when I come back I find that is has crashed yet again. It would be nice if downloadr could get a list of all a users images without a preview image (like Flickr Down dose in sets) and if it was able to look-up a users Sets (like Flickr Down) or collections and it would be really nice if downloadr would NEVER crash!
Hey are you planning on making downloadr work right anytime soon? It feels like some inexperienced 2-bit noob programmer that learned his skills or lack thereof from a “Programming for Dummies” book made it. Downloadr needs many new features and vast improvements before I would ever even consider donating 2 cents to you. Until downloadr starts to resemble a real professional piece of software in any way no one will give 2-shits about it. You have a good idea and downloadr is a useful tool but while the truth may hurt, it feels like a child made it.

@oblivionx205: If you're so good at programming why don't you write the app yourself. This guy is putting something out for free on his own time and you say something like that. Pathetic.
@janten: Why don't you throw the source code online so others can help you out?

@Janten
I have just started using downloadr and I have run into a problem. I searched for 50 images with tag 'winter' and downloaded them. I also selected some of the images and previewed them using the downloadr->extras->priview selected option and I had the tags for all. However after downloading these 50 images only one of the total 50 images retained the tags others had no tags attached with them. Can you help me solve this problem. I am usnig Vista 64.
Thanks

Is it just me or is it downloading videos as .jpg (also as png files) files?
Is it possible for next version to have mime type detection of the videos and add the proper file extension?

Oblivion: Well, downloadr is not meant to be "professional software". I write the code in my spare time and since I am using a Mac I do not code much C# anymore. You are free to build your own tool. Regarding the "2-bit noob programmer": How many bits should a real programmer use?
swapnil: Have you tried this version I posted earlier? Please try it and let me know about your results. Metadata is a major problem right now and I cannot find a reliable way to write it.
KtecK: I do not use videos on flickr and they were not even available when I started programming downloadr. But I will have a look and try to change the extensions accordingly. Should not be too hard to implement.

I am sorry about the comment I made. I guess I was just in a bad mood that day and the problems I was having with your program was not helping.
Also if this problem has not been reported, downloadr is not adding the .jpg suffix to the files it downloads and since I use downloadr to download hundreds if not thousands of images I usually just end up deleting them because I won't spend the many hours it would take to add ".jpg" to every file.
Problem #2: Downloadr does not show any photos or says a user has no photos or sets when in-fact the person dose. This guy (Steeles240) has 12,525 publicly available images and not being able to download them with downloadr, a program meant to alleviate the tediousness of downloading them individually is why I get so angry at this program, Why won't it just fucking work and do what I want it to.

Steeles240's account is marked unsave (you need to be looged in to see his pictures) and therefore can not be accessed via the API if you are not authenticated. In downloadr click Extras/Authenticate and follow the instructions. You will be able to see the pictures afterwards.

Maybe I have a tendency to break software but as I use downloadr, as I am selecting images a shitload of smaller windows keep popping up with each image in a separate window, I am not saying downloadr isn't supposed to do this but it is too easy and annoying to inadvertently activate this function; maybe for future version a user must click a button to trigger the event?

@Janten: I tried downloadr from the link you gave me in ur last reply to me. However while installing it says settings.xml can't be found so reverting to defaults. however I ignored it to try this version of downloadr. Hoiwever when i selected some pictures to download it gave me the following error: Unable to cast COM object of Microsft.WindowsAPICodePack.shell.CtaskbarList to interface type Microsfot.WindowsAPICodePack.Shell.Taskbar.ITaskbarList3. Saying that no such interface supported. Help would be appreciated.

It is very irritating and time consuming to watch downloadr because the program stops every time it encounters an error such as "page not found", an so I must cancel it and deselect the images it has already downloaded and then continue to repeat this process another 20-30 images later which would not be an issue had the programmer not overlooked such a small and obvious flaw and had designed downloadr to depending on what kind of error was encountered to either retry the download or skip it and move on. Please fix this problem.

The API doesn't have this functionality.
You can get the get the group ID if you have the group url, but not its name.
Your best bet is to list all groups for a particular user.

Just wanted to let you know that the next version of downloadr is coming. It is just taking (a lot) longer than I thought it would. It is totally awesome to see how many people are using it - over 6200 different authenticated users already!

@ColleenM
If anything, Downloadr will have to start complying with the API TOS, which means you'll only be able to download your own images, and images that the photographer has allowed your account to download.
any photographer that has public photos allows people to download them, because downloading it necessary in order to view them (they are in fact downloaded by the browser and stored in your computer cache).
the issue is that of using the photos, which should comply with the copyright. this issue has been extensively discussed in the Flickr forum, and i agree with the point made by "The searcher" in those other threads.

Were you able to use Downloadr for downloading the image along with the tags? The tags werent being downloaded for me. Let me know if you were able to make it work.
@ Janten:
Did you find Any way to make the tag thing working? I had copied the error in my earlier reply which I was getting with the downloadr version you gave me the link to.

Metadata will be supported in the next version (except for geo-location which will follow later). It will also write metadata in a way that allows Windows 7/Vista to read an display it. There are some major problems with the implementation though, so don't halt your breath.

First, I love this program. If I find someone that I know that has tons of photos, and I want to download them, it cuts the download time and effort greatly!
But, I am also having the problem of Downloadr not adding the .jpg suffix to the files it downloads and I also use downloadr to download a lot of images, I have tried using a batch file renamer to add the .jpg suffix to all pics. This works, except, the pics in the download folder don't display thumbnails, just little white boxes! lol! The do open as the photos in photoshop and if you preview, just not in folder view. - And I am running Vista Home Basic.

When you double-click an image in the search results, a pop-up window appears with a file that is bigger than the thumbnail from the search results.
When I select all the files for download from a search result, I would like an option to save that "pop-up sized" image when there is no higher resolution image available or the photo's "can be downloaded" property = 0.
i.e. I'd like the code to:
A) Try downloading the full size image using the API, and if that code discovers while doing that attempt that the image cannot be downloaded:
B) If image cannot be downloaded, simply save instead the image that is available by double-clicking the preview.

@rodrokz
Could you send me one of the pictures that does not display a thumbnail?
@darrenmyher
Downloadr will try to download the photo with the highest resolution possible, but it will never download photos with "candownload = 0" since I guess that that tag applies to all versions of the image. I know that you can pretty easily download the photo using your browser, but I will stick to the API and that's what it says.

New version released. It lacks some features of the last version but I need some feedback on the new download handler before I re-add them. Using a new setup now, sorry for that. Allows you to run downloadr from the start menu, though.

- I think maybe it was a problem with my dot.net. - It's downloading FAST now! The only suggestion I have, and it's only a thought, is maybe the addition of a "download all" button, or option. - It's petty, and I just select a pic and hit control-A to choose them all, but I was thinking that a lot of people don't know shortcut keys! lol! As I said, it's just a thought, but I LOVE the program as it is now.
Thank you again.

Really - this is the best flickr backup tool so far - and I tried them all..
Did you ever think about moving this thread to something like Google code forums? I mean something that provides a way to handle bug reports, feature requests, etc..?
I'd really like to have geo-location saved for backups - following this thread it's not easy to find out when there is a new version which supports this..

Hi. I already have .NET 3.5 but the setup still try to download it and if I let it install 3.5, it will crash and interrupt and close the setup process. What can I do? can I avoid that setup trying to install .net 3.5?

Does anyone else have that problem? It worked on all computers I've tried so far, but I only have access to german versions of windows so it may be correlated to the language.
Can you download the executables directly from "janten.com/downloadr/setup/Application Files" and tell me if they work? You have to change all the filenames from *.exe.deploy to *.exe etc.

@janten The current release method is bad for windows 7 users (will be globally public oct 22). If you install .net 3.5 on win7 it badly breaks .net framework (version 3.5 or newer is pre-installed and the exe tries to install 3.5).
I use Inno Setup from www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php and its easy to use and you can have download based on component selection... and you can also set min/max os version (win7 is supported min/max ver)

@janten I could help you package up a nice installer thats windows 7 friendly (Using inno setup). Since i have been using it for over a year to release a app of my own and I had to get over the Windows 7 .net framework hurdle my self.
The product is StreamDesk ( streamdesk.ca/windows.sd )... check out the installer and if you are interested id be happy to help.

Nice piece of work here, and very useful. What would make it more useful would be the ability to get downloaded files renamed to the photo's title automatically.
I couldn't find an option to do this, but I presume it must be quite easy to add?
At the moment, I can't use Downloadr for my current task because of this.

@oblivionx: Sorry, you will have do deinstall downloadr first, then download the setup again and install it. This is because my certificate expired (at least that's what I think). You can deinstall downloadr in Windows' "Add/Remove programs".
@haelio: It's not that easy since Windows does not allow every character in filenames and sometimes multiple images have the same (or even worse: no) title. But I will probably add that feature within the next weeks.

hi, is it normal to be stuck at the part of .net 3.5 installation? i already have the program installed in my computer but the installer goes ahead and try to download and install it anyway. i've been waiting a long while but i have yet to see the installation bar move.
any advice will be great. thanks.

I guess many people have a problem with that so I will just remove the check for .NET 3.5, so everyone will have to install it themselves.

Downloadr keeps crashing when I use the fulltext search, it downloads previews for anywhere from 500-2500 pictures then stops working. Is there anyway you can make downloadr work like www.saleensoftware.com/Flickr_Downloader.aspx where it makes a list of each page and then downloads the images on each page, when I download images I usually download them all and so it has always been a pain to wait for downloadr to download preview images before I can do anything. The other program I use which I linked above for some reason will only download pages 1-7 out of a search that returned more then 25,000 images and should be more then 1,500 pages.
