Make sure that you have previews in Aperture for all the photos you want to transfer to your iPhone. As far as I know, only photos with previews can be used in other iLife apps, such as iTunes.

i've tried this by selecting the project the photos reside in. then choosing photos > update previews for project.
having done this, i've launched itunes and checked again but it is still not picking up the photos in the smart album.

Are the photos (in Ap3) RAW or JPG files?

JPG...although I do have the raw imported too. but the project is currently using JPGs as the masters.
EDIT - actually they are a combination of the two. i have some jpgs set as master within the project and some as raw set as the master.

Same problem here. Rebuilding the Library does not help.

Are any photos part of a Stack?

some of the photos are part of a stack, not all. however, the ones i am interested in and want syncing to my iphone are the pick of the stack so i would expect them to get recognised and picked up in itunes as they are in the smart albums in aperture.

Yes, I thought the same but it doesn't seem to work that way, all photos in the stack get sent across. I found I had to unstack, then choose the pic photo I wanted added to the album I sync with my iPhone. Not at all convenient.

that's the thing though. i have a different smart album that is being picked up (only this time it's not showing the correct number of photos rather than picking up absolutely nothing).
this latter smart album is picking both photos that are the pick of a stack and those that aren't in a stack.
so there doesn't seem to be any definite pattern. even within the smart album for which no photos are being picked up, i would expect at least those not in a stack to be recognised if your theory is correct. however, this isn't the case.
it's all rather puzzling!

Yes. it is. As I haven't used Smart Albums, I'll have a look.

I use albums. In fact I set up a special album just for iPhone pics.

I recently have had the same problem. I've checked all my settings and still can't get the photos to sync to my iPhone. Yet another A3 bug that's driving me nuts...

Had this issue with AP2 and AP3, need to ensure that both thumbnails and previews exist and then it works fine.

Did you upgrade to latest iPhone software?

Mr_Douglas - thanks! i had the previews created which other people had suggested updating. this alone didn't solve the issue. however, after generating the thumbnails, the smart album has started picking up the photos in itunes!
not the correct number at the moment...but i will look further in to that.

I was going crazy over this issue. Generating thumbnails worked for me too! Thanks!

Mine or not in the order they are in Aperture, they seem to be in a random order, quite frustrating.
