unlikely - i doubt very much that the iPad hardware would cope with Ap3 demands - and Ap3 would have to completely re-written for the iPad OS - so i reckon there wont be an iPad version any time soon - as for syncing photos - lets hope it works like an iPod in that respect

I've heard about both Aperture 3 and iPad, but rarely in the same sentence. Aperture 3 requires Intel CPUs and OSX 10.5.8 or later. iPad offers neither. Aperture 3 barely works on a MacBook, so I can't see how it should possibly work on an iPad, which is essentially an iPhone with a large LCD.

You can sync photos from Aperture over to the iPad photos app, just like you can with an iPhone or iPod Touch. You can also import photos from a camera or SD card onto the iPad, although I would guess that RAW is excluded. Interestingly, the iPad can support a fairly hefty 720p motion JPEG, which seems to me to be targeted at digital camera shooters (Nikon in particular).

Anyways, it looks pretty good as a basic photo presentation device, and with 3rd-party apps maybe even some editing. But Aperture is a whole different class of application. They might complement each other quite well, though. We'll see on April 3rd when I pick a 32GB version up!

The iPad can pass along RAW files, and I believe it used the embedded JPEG to display them. This seem super handy being able to off-load them when you're in the field, take a quick look, and then import them to Aperture when you return home.

I would like to be able to play Aperture slide-shows on the iPad. I know I could convert them to quicktime and sync them through iTunes, but it would be nice to be able to show works in progress that you could continue to edit in Aperture and have them sync over to your iPad.

@Canis latrans:
You can easily do that on the iPhone/Touch by syncing an Aperture album through iTunes. Why shouldn't you be able to do the same on the iPad?

Rune Johnsson does it play the audio, and transitions of an Aperture slideshow?
(edit: I just checked with my iPhone, and I can sync projects and albums, but not books and slideshows...I think it would take some app version of Aperture to do that)

Tethering with an iPad would be nice. But just for screen quality pics.. Storing full quality on it would make it run like mud.

There is a program for the iPhone allowing you to remote control your camera. When closeup behind the bride and groom shots taken from the alter become more prevalent then I'm sure it will be used more.

(Rant mode on....)

Call me a cynic, but I'm wondering why everybody is falling for the marketing hype surrounding the iPad? It would seem, at first glance, to be an overblown iPod touch, with no multitasking, no tactile feedback for typing, no disk drive, no USB port, no Ethernet, proprietary CPU and video display hardware and drivers, no camera, etc etc

I'm just wondering what niche it will fill? It seems to be a real "tweener" - between an iPod touch and a Macbook Air.

So, if it's light and portable that you need, why not a Macbook Air? Or even a 13" Macbook? It's not THAT much bigger, will do a LOT more, and yes, it costs a bit more.

I am an incorrigible early adopter, and cost is usually not a deterrent for me. But I really can't see myself buying an iPad. If I did, I'd probably play with it for a day or two, then it would be put away somewhere while I did my real stuff on my Macbook Pro. Heavens above - the iPad doesn't even have an SD card reader, let alone a USB port. So downloading pictures from the camera in the field is not all that convenient, to say the least. I prefer a 13" MBP with a built-in SD card reader and bigger screen, then copy across to the big iMac at home.

I must be a bit dense, because I really can't see just what ACTUAL use an iPad would be, apart from being a very nice plaything....

End of rant... ;)

I see tablets running these smartphone OS's. Android, 7 Series and iPhone OS will one day outsell notebooks. People think they want fully packed operating systems so they look at netbooks, Macbook Air or the HP Slate. But in the end what do 90% of the world do with their laptops? Email, web and media. So why use a full desktop OS when there are devices coming built specifically for lounging? We're not trying to replace our computer, we want to make the most useful parts of it portable.

I preordered an iPad, but to be honest it's only got two things going for it. 1) The incredible app catalog and 2) Its real. The one I hope becomes the future is the Microsoft Courier. It looks so productive and elegant, but it's still months away from being an actual device.

If it wasn't for photo editing, my MBP (my only computer) would be overkill. I think someday i will have a big bad iMac, an iPad and my iPhone. Period.

I plan on getting an iPad next year when house repairs are paid for (this year if I win the lottery).

I like the fact that it's small enough to be easily portable, unlike my MacBook. (Weight isn't a concern. Space is. A MacBook Air is still too big to fit easily into my camera bag.)

I like the fact that I can run iWork on it. I use Pages and Keynote extensively, and being able to edit on-the-run is very tempting. I think I'd need to buy a wireless keyboard for typing, but that's not a big deal.

I like the screen being bigger than my iPod Touch, as I find the Touch a bit difficult to read now, and following a movie on the Touch is painful.

I don't see using it to offload my camera, as it has limited memory and extra SD cards are cheaper.

I could see using it for a camera remote. The chap at the local camera store demonstrated an app that did that with my camera, and it would be really handy for times when getting back to the camera to see if the shot worked would be tricky. I'm planning on getting it for my Touch, and the iPad's bigger screen would be even better. Not a huge use, but worth the couple of bucks for the app.

I'm pretty sure the iPad was never designed for the technologically adept and the power user.

It is for the average person who emails, looks at family photo albums, surfs the web, watches movies, and plays a few games. The ones who don't need Aperture. Those that don't need their machine to have 5 different kind of ports and connections. The people who keep all their files on the desktop because the filing system scares them.

The iPad is all user interface. It's computer software in easy mode.

The hardware isn't the amazing or great thing about it. Pretty, yes. Competent for the intended audience, I think so. The reason to buy it, no.

I count myself the former as a tech geek, but I know I am in the vast minority. I look at friends, my parents, people I meet day to day. After this, I am completely assured of the iPads immense success. Apple will sell 10's of millions.

I might buy an iPad for my wife.. The jury is still out on it's usefulness for me.

If Daylite comes out with a full blown version which will allow me to respond to leads the minute they come in.. I will get one.

The only apps now are big iPhone apps. Scalable apps built for the iPad interface of touch will be what's needed.

What will be the killer App that makes people want to buy one?

A dock and forward facing camera for skype video calls.
Voice recognition with killer editing. iPhone already has what it could be like with Dragon.

Ability to mount in a safe location in a car and use as a giant GPS.

Info Select - currently only a WIndows program. Anyone here who has used this really cool program will know what I mean.

Whether you want it as a flashy toy or you really have a use for it. It will go between Smart Apps Phone and Laptop.

You might carry information like business contracts and calendar info in this because it's easier to see. But for heavier lifting use your laptop or desktop.

It's kinda like a Segway.. they look fun and neat. I would like to have one... but um at $4000 + I don't need one that bad. I can even see myself using it to lug photographic equipment around larger shoots. Also using for dolly shots with my video camera.... I think if I doubled my wedding bookings my wife may let me have one... ha ha

@mrbrent62 - re InfoSelect....

What a fantastic program. I've been using it since version 1, but I think they've dropped the ball on it now. No updates for a year or two (although it still does everything it says on the tin, and that search... WOW - never seen a faster search!)

But I've emailed them several times, as have many others apparently, for a Mac version. Nothing! Just "We've put it on the list of things we may do"

But getting back to the iPad - it just won't have the horsepower to run Aperture, and I'm pretty sure that Aperture won't run under the modified iPhone OS that will run the iPad.

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but I DO use my Macs for a lot more than just email, websurfing, and the odd photoframe slideshow, along with iTunes.

For those who'd like to see one app, for starters, that will blow your mind (if you're not already aware of it, that is) that I use all the time, check out Curio (www.zengobi.com)

I also use Logic Pro (can't see that running on an iPad) and Final Cut (same). Also, numerous other musical apps (eg Reason) and Photo apps (eg Portrait Professional), none of which would run on an iPad.

All the other stuff I can do on my iPhone anyway - web, email, etc. Even Google Voice Search. So why would I want something that won't do a lot more than my iPhone, and won't do nearly as much as my MBP?

Having said all that, I'm sure that Apple will sell squillions of them - all down to pure marketing and hype. ;)

Derridale, what is Curio useful for? It looks like a mind-mapping application, or a digital notebook, but I'm having trouble seeing how it could be useful. Would you mind giving an example?

Derridale (Pete)  Pro User  says:

Hi Etherflyer :)

Mind Mapping is only a very small part of what Curio can do. Collecting notes, planning trips (yes - photo shoots included), - in fact planning ANYTHING. Collecting notes, Web sites and links, jpgs, pdfs, linking them all together.

It is like having a huge, infinitely extensible whiteboard on which to draw, pin, stick, and write.

As all traditional software ads say: "limited only by your imagination" ;)

I recently used it to plan an extensive overseas trip, including having all my e-tickets, hotel bookings, hire car reservations, sights to see, side trips to make (all with direct URLs attached), people to contact complete with all contact details, all in Curio.

I use it to plan projects, complete with "do by" dates, which then acts like a target and reminder system.

It links directly into Evernote (another wonderful app) from www.evernote.com Curio can throw up a palette of Evernote notes which can in turn be dragged onto the "whiteboard" space.

And it looks great, doesn't cost much, and has one of the most responsive developers I've ever come across on the Zengobi forum.

I should point out that I have no affiliation with Zengobi/Curio - simply a very keen and satisfied user.

Hope that helps - sorry it's a bit off topic on this thread :)

I know this thread is a little old but seems the most relevant to my thoughts / question. Am currently thinking about buying a Wacom Intuos pad for more accurate editing with Aperture 3.

With my Macbook I can share the screen of my Mac Pro which is where I do my photo editing. Now I wondered whether it would be possible (and I guess Apple can only answer this!) for the ipad to act as a slave screen of Aperture on another Mac. Then in theory you could use the ipad for Aperture adjustments. A pen would obviously be more accurate and there are of course issues of your hand touching the screen elsewhere while trying to draw but just thought it might be something for Apple to have a think about!

Now whether to buy an Intuos4 in the meantime....

I can only guess on the iPad acting as a secondary monitor and that guess would be no.

As for getting an Intuos4 my recommendation is absolutely. Photo editing is so much better with a pen than with a mouse.

It might interest some of you that I am developing an iPad app that solves some of the iPad's shortcomings. With Tagalicious, my app, you can import photos from Aperture to your iPad wirelessly. On your iPad, you can rate these photos and sync the ratings back to Aperture. You can find out more here.
