Aperture won't import DNG files converted from Olympus E-P1 RAW

I have an Olympus E-P1 and shoot RAW.

I know Apple lags behind with RAW support and intended to use Olympus Studio to convert the RAWs to TIFFs for import into Aperture but I'm not happy with the results nor the time it takes Studio to do the job.

I reckoned I might have better success converting the Olympus .ORF RAW files to Adobe .DNG files. I've downloaded Adobe DNG RAW Converter 5.6 and converted a folder of Olympus .ORF RAW files, saving the converted .DNG files to a new folder. I've used the converter as downloaded - not changed any settings.

When I open Aperture and go to Import from the new folder containing the .DNG files, the files are shown as dotted outlines of blank squares. The Image Information shows file name, date, type etc but with a dimension of 128 x 128. If I click on Import All, I get an 'Import Images Completed with Errors' message box saying '0 images have been imported into the project ...' and listing the failed files.

Does Aperture not support .DNG files or is there some setting I need to change first?

In the DNG converter dialog box there is a button to change preferences. Try changing the compatibility backwards to 4.6 and later. Adobe has made some changes to DNG lately and it is possible that the changes are not supported by Apple yet. I have not heard anything to this effect, but it is still worth a try. Setting the compatibility back will allow older versions of Photoshop to read the files.

Thanks for the suggestion, David. Unfortunately, changing the compatibility settings makes no difference.

It looks like the problem lies with the as yet unsupported E-P1 .ORF RAW files. I'd be interested to hear from anyone else who uses Aperture to manage their E-P1 files.

(On a side note, I also use an Olympus E-520. There are no problems using .DNG files converted from it's .ORF RAW files, but the E-520 is on Apple's list of supported cameras. One thing I do notice with the E-520's files is that once the .DNGs are imported, Aperture offers me two options in the RAW Fine Tuning brick: 2.0 and 2.0 DNG. Both produce slightly different results and both differ from the .ORF files imported straight into Aperture.)

My camera is not on the supported list but it shoots dng in camera and the files work fine in Aperture. Ap is supposed to support dng files from unsupported cameras as a means of allowing it to support any camera Adobe supports by using the converter. I find it odd that it's not working in this case.

On the other hand, cameras that offer sraw have the same issue where even dng conversions don't work in Aperture. Must be something in the file that throws Ap off. Hopefully it will get fixed.

I have written a little app that fools Aperture into reading E-P1 and 2 RAW files.

I use Catapult to roundtrip RAWs with Adobe Camera Raw (Photoshop). When I reimport them, I can edit them. It works, but I can't do stacking and such since I can’t view the images. :-( The trick around that is to do -J (New Version from Master JPEG) in the contextual menu—you’ll get duplicate masters though and will have to know which is which :-(

The reason it's not recognized is that Aperture hasn't been updated to support RAW files with lensdata in it (yet). I imagine that will happen, but it is the same thing even if you convert the RAWs to DNGs first. Adobe DNG is a moving target and it moved underneath Apple again so the updated DNGs (with lensdata) are no longer converted.

I'll look into kevinparis’s solution.

BTW: Has anyone tried this hack? www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20091222051237502&a.... Not sure if it can work as the only one with the same character length of the EP1 is the E30.
