About Apartment Gardening (Gardening in a Balcony of an Apartment)

I live in a small Apartment in Tokyo, want to work and have a fun also in the small balcony of my apartment, too.

Of course, although I want to have a house with large garden, too, but it is not easy at all to have such house here in Tokyo, seem to be regretly impossible for the most of people living big modern city like Tokyo.
So, I have decided to make the best garden in the balcony of my apartment, but don't know how to make it, even don't have any idea of what is best.

Maybe, there are many people like me also in the World.
Some of them may have already found the good way or good garden in one's balcony in the World.
How is the nice garden in a balcony ? What is the best ?
