I have always used canon equipment for over 25 years. My current digital cameras are a Canon 5D & Canon 300D both produce excellent results but the 5D with over 12 million pixels and a big viewing screen is really a class act.

My biggest complaint over the years and it is a mega one is that Canon keep changing the lens fitting.
All my old FD lenses are useless and even the standard lens that came with the 300D an EFS 18-55mm zoom does not fit the Canon 5D. I understand that all old Nikon lenses fit all new Nikons so if I was starting again from scratch Nikon would have saved me a lot of money in the lens department.

My other gripe is that both the 300D and 5D don't have the mirror sealing off the sensor, so with frequent lens changes all sorts of muck finds it's way under the mirror and onto the sensor. I don't know if this is a problem with all digital SLR's or just Canon. ( If anyone knows the correct way to physically clean the sensor I would be very keen to know)

would I ever change no I like the feel and weight of the 5D and I am used to the canon PC software

Nikon 100 then to the D200, my D300 will be here next week with the new 16 - 85mm VR II lens.
With lens calibration, 17x zoom-through-the-shot for extrafine focusing, 51 points sensor that actually tracks a moving subject through several shots, programming old Nikkor manual lenses... 99% of D3 right here. Too cool.

I used to shot all film and had a nikon. Before I boought it I tried a number of cameras and canon just was not comforatable in my hand. When I went to digital, I tried again a number of cameras and I found that the Nikon still won for comfort in hand and the D80 has what I need. As I read through the thread I saw the two compared wrt noise and It is true that the canon has less noise at higher ISO numbers with comparitable models but that wasn't enough for me to switch from Nikon. As Far as quality of photo that has more to do with the photographer and both the ability to capture a shot and the proper post production of that shot. I cannot look at a photo and tell if it was a nikon or canon that took the shot.

LOL.....this discussion is about as petty as the one here in town, about which bowling center is better....GRC or Sheridan! The opinions run strong, the "die-hards" won't go near the "other 'place"; and the rest of us go with the flow and do our best with wherever we are or whatever we have! Now, re: Canon/Nikon debate.....I "happen" to have a Canon XTi, ONLY because I just "happen" to have one...doesn't matter though, because I'd be technically challenged either way! lol.........I do my best with what I have, and the results are from something I'VE done (even though I probably have NO idea how I got them), NOT from the camera! I've gotten some pretty decent shots from "throw-aways"......so, why not just HAVE FUN with what you've got! I DO!!!!!!!!! Hope everyone has a great tomorrow!

Wow, I can't believe the number of posts in this thread. I have a Nikon D80. Love it, but, never had anything else other than P&S. To me, it felt better than the Cannon at the time and I liked the features and controls. Turns out I can take crappy, good, and great shots with it, expect I could do the same with a Cannon.

Still love it. Just need a couple pieces of glass to round out the kit and I am good togo for a few years.

Neither and both!

Nikon - ergonomics, flash, Creative Lighting System, better WA lenses (14-24mm f2.8 for example), better LCD/colour preview, older lens availability (F-mount AI/AIS lens compatibility).

Canon - Generally better sensors in low light (apart from Nikon D3), more VR/IS lens choices, better tele lenses (1000mm f5.6 for example), more semi-pro f4 aperture zoom lens choices, better live-view implementation, more megapixels (1D = 21 MP).

These are personal opinions/observations and generalisations - there are of course exceptions to these "rules"

Both systems are great - both systems have flaws!

Fanboys suck - get over it ;-)

I chose Nikon because they feel "right" in my hand - friends have chosen Canon because they have specialised needs like low light event photography. Im happy - they are happy.....just go shoot!

Honda or Yamaha?
Ducati or MV Augusta?
Ferrari or Lamborghini?
Blah or Blah?????????

Unfortunately, a great history of cameras has been sold to Sony recently: Minolta.
I think the beginning of the end was when they decided to call the brand "Konica Minolta" because Konica had a snapshot and cheap brand image.

Everything on my photostream with the exception of a few images from a D70 are from a POS Kodak EasyShare. I think I do ok.

This summer brings an slr and I would be happy with either a canon or a nikon. I'll most likely opt for the one with the biggest bang for the buck body and a couple of decent lenses.

If it's digital or scanned and you know your way a round a decent photo editor, you can make something pretty good look awesome.

Go for your personal ergonomic feel and sensitivity.

Brian D. Reed Photography says:

I have photographed with both manufacturers over the years and have had great results from both.

My current rig is the Canon 20D with various Canon lenses. The reason I stuck with the Canon is because it was the one that I really started out with 28 years ago and so I just stuck with it. That and the fact that my old Canon lenses (35-135mm f/4.5 and 100-300mm f/4.5) from my EOS Elan fit on the 20D when I got it. I have since upgraded my lenses, of course, but I still have the original two lenses that my son will be taking over when I get him his XTi in June. :-)

So yep. Either manufacturer will work. Best thing to do is go to a local camera shop and just handle all the various bodies to see which one fits your hands and style the best. That is the true method of figuring out a Canon vs Nikon vs any other manufacturer.

Dixon Marshall (Trying to Catch UP)  Pro User  says:

I recently bought a Canon 40D, because there is much more value for the money, This was after months of research. I am happy with it, it is very ergonomic, which is important as I have arthritis.

I have shot with a Nikon D200 that I rented, and got excellent results. I also had bad shots, but I can get those with my Canon, too.

Nikons are good too, there is just not enough difference (except cost) to spar about. Both brands are capable of breathtaking images--or soul sucking crap images. It's the photographer behind the camera that makes the picture. I can't do oil painting, and one or another
brand of brush is not going to help me.

Go with what works for you. Unless you have plenty of spending money for lenses, you are buying into a system and won't want to change, even if one brand is slightly better than the other this week. That can reverse next week, so really, this is a silly debate.

I think Canon have better lens range, better sensors (except for nikon D3) and are better value - however, the Nikon bodies just work really, really well, and when you don't have much time and want the shot, it's Nikon, Nikon Nikon! It tempted me over from Canon to Nikon recently. I looked at Canon 5D and D40 - could've bought either, but chose the D40! (some, I know, will call me crazy - I'll go sit in the corner with KenRockwell!!) For sports, Canon 40D (fast FPM, great fast good value long lenses - though D300 also good choice) - for Landscape, Canon 5D (best sensor except for nikon D3) - For everything else, buy a D40 or if you got lots of cash, a D300! Just my ha'penny. I also love my Fuji F30FD (looked at high iso images from the new F100FD and they look worse that the F30 - boo hoo - was hoping to upgrade)

Nikon D3 is the best so far. Better ergonomic and better flash system as well. Sensor is finally good as Canon's.

in 1Ds Mark III they removed very valuable future (at least for me), when you can assign exposure correction button to back/right button on corner of the body.

I have just spent the last half hour reading this thread, and I am still laughing. To say this is a hot topic is an understatement. Kudos to the group for posting this thread beacause it gives so many people a place to vent their opinions. I joined a photo club and listenend to 2 gentlemen argue over this for an hour. Friendly but also informative, as they really knew their stuff. I went for a walk the other day and listened to 2 different people have the same argument. I laughed the whole way home! I'm not telling what equipment I have because it is so much fun to sit on the fence and watch the sparks fly. Another idea for a hot topic.........photoshop or not? Pure vs. maufactured........I have been witness to at least 3 arguments on this topic as well.......................keep our opinions alive, everybody gets to pick their own and keep it, no matter what else is said, and you are allowed to change your opinion......sometimes it takes a bigger person to change then it does to hold your ground. Continue the debate my fine folk.....................

My first camera was a kodak 110, my first slr, a Canon AE-1 Program, (which I still own), my first auto focus, Canon eos 7, (ok, i kept my manual focus as long as i could, my eyes finally went out on me), I swore i would never go digital, i'm an old fart don't ya know, but finally broke down and bought a Canon 20d.
All this said, when I was going to go from manual focus to auto focus, it wasn't hard for me to stay with Canon. Then when chosing to go to digital, all my auto focus lenses fit the Canon digitial, so the choice was easy.
I will not knock Nikon, nor any other camera, to each their own, I just know Canon has done me well over my lifetime.

P.S. I'm presently using a D70s, primarily since I started out on an F3... and the equipment means nothing without knowledge, skill and a bit of creativity and inspiration.

Nikon D300; mostly because I got sucked into the Nikon ecosystem 10+ years ago. It always made more sense to upgrade to a new Nikon and not have to replace my lenses.

I haven't used Canon so I don't really know what's better, but I gather it has more to do with which one has the more recent model revision than anything else.

Michael DaKidd  Pro User  says:

After wandering through point&shoot Hell I finally tried a pentax 35mm (zx-1, I think, or something), and a canon Rebel G, that a friend picked up in a pawn shop for me. This gave me the inspiration to learn how to develop bw film after feeling hacked over by retail film processors. One day a guy in a photo group offered me a deal on a canon ef telephoto lens that he'd found.
My film career became thoroughly dissatisfying to me when I discovered, through my own bw film developing efforts, that the retail film processors might not have hacked me off as much as I'd originally thought.
With that discovery, along with the near-constant casual disdain heaped upon me by "real" photographers for my p&s shooters, I decided that it was time to go dslr. Having one pentax lens, and two canon lens, the choice was pretty simple when I came across a good deal on a used canon digital Rebel (300d) on eBay.
Since then I have acquired a Rebel XTi, and a 40D, and several lenses from various mfg; my walkaround lenses are a Tamron 18-250 f/3.5-6.3, and a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, and I own some canons for specialized uses.
My photography seems, at least to me, to have improved since when I first started posting to flickr. Probably some small part of that is due to equipment better suited to what I am trying to capture. The greatest bulk of my improvement is the direct result of some classes, some books, and a vast increase in practice. I have seen what appears to be some mighty fine equipment hit the stores from Sony, Pentax, Sigma, Nikon, and Canon: each new model, from each mfg, seems to revolutionize the industry at the time of its introduction, and many times my mind will take off running with ideas for how I can add this new tech to my arsenal. However, I am certain that the cycle will never end, and that, with rare exception, as each mfg puts their best foot forward with their new product, there is precious little difference in quality from one company to the next, and one cannot go wrong with whatever mfg they choose.
Had I not already had some canon equipment and canon experience, I could just as easily gone with another mfg. Certainly, after I bought my first canon dslr, the real" photographers began to heap derision on me for not buying Nikon, or Pentax, or Sony, or medium-format, and so on....

Never mind that I have discovered that there are an awful lot of people in the world, and on flickr and other photo sites, who make their p&s cameras ( including some models that I have owned or used in the past!!! ) do all sorts of marvelous things that I still can't do with my fancy dslr's...
As long as the equipment is good, it's all about the photographer's ability to translate their vision to the viewer.

After reading through the discussion, I have to agree with all those who say the hand that holds the camera is much more important. There was this one fellow (can't remember his name) who used to do photo shoots for Playboy with disposable cameras. Yes - disposable cameras that you see at the supermarket checkouts. His shots were absolutely stunning.

My first experience with cameras was my older brother's Minolta 35mm. I had a lot of fun with it, but I also took a lot of crappy pics with it. About 6 years ago I bought my first digital - a Panasonic DMC LC-20 with a Leica lens. I got some amazing shots with it, but it was feature-scarce. Next up was borrowing my wife's Canon Powershot p&s. I think it is one of the best p&s cameras I've seen for overall quality and compactness.

My latest acquisition was my first dslr - a Nikon D40X. I chose it because I really liked the picture quality and the features. Many of my friends shoot with Canons and Nikons, so it was a subjective choice for me. I don't know if either is better than the other in terms of equipment, but I do know that any camera can produce magnificent results in the hands of a skilled photographer, so I am trying to concentrate on learning what makes a great picture. :-D

When it comes to Nikon vs. Canon then I say let's settle it like my generation did when the above stuff also mattered just as much as this insane difference can now. On the field. If you like Canon and I like Nikon, then we settle it by which either team wins.... 7 innings, 4 fouls is an out, and no pinch hitters.

2008, same argument different item but the game is words and no longer sandlot baseball... so which of those is better? Words or Baseball? Hey Im on my way to become a professional commercial photographer, this thing about the camera ..mmm... I don't find it really like a trouble or a better or worse thing, I think its more like the way you enjoy and know how to use it, many many ppl buy Canons or Nikons , and they keep on taking bad bad pics, ppls who used to take a bad 3mpx pic today take those same bad pics in 10mpx cameras. Summarizing, I think its more like knowing what you have and enjoy it, I have a nikon D40x, and Im looking forward to get a D200 or D300, but it is my choice, I know people who owns Canons and take pretty amazing shots.... Its the artist, not the brush..... but a very good brush is needed of course....

Canon Xti because I'm cheap and wanted the ability of a DSLR without the $$$$.

In the future I may invest more, but you can drop many a dime on lenses and other add ons. I went for the basic body.

I red somewhere that Canon is the better Camera made by engineers and Nikon is the better Camera made by photographers (si non e vero ben trovato).

Well, there are more "names": Leica, Pentax, Olympus, and more ... , with excelents cameras and excellents lens (Sigma, Tamron, Tokina ...). I think is not a competition like F1, just use a Camera that you feel comfortable with it. The tool is not so important.

MacTel or WinTel? MacBook Pro, of course, running Mac OS X 10.5.2

CaNikon or Olympus? This is a no brainer...

Which other brand ensures stabilization for all of its glass (Zuiko Digital, Leica and Sigma)?

Which is the only system redesigned from scratch to optimize for digital photography, with a telecentric sensor virtually free of chromatic aberration and all the rest of the "legacy" issues?

Which one ensures a permanently dust-free sensor?

Which has the best optics available?

Not to be a show-off but rethorical questions without evidence are simply not enough. So here's some samples:

I have Canon (20D, my wife an XT and Xti). I like the features you get for your money. The XTi (multiple AF points, meters through lenses - I adapt Nikon, Pentax K and screwmount, Olympus lenses and they will meter and even AF confirm with the adapters) vs. the D40 - D40 (3 AF points, limited lenses because of no motor, older Nikon lenses fit, but don't meter). All will take great photos. I just think you get more for your money in Canon bodies (exception is the Nikon D3). I hear rumors that Nikon has the edge on their wide angle and Canon the edge on telephoto lenses. Well, with Canon I can have the best of both worlds - I adapt the Nikon lenses onto the Canon (and can meter them stopped down - you have to go with D100 series and higher on Nikon to meter through the older Nikon MF lenses). I have some great glass that was a bargain used adapted from other 35mm brands. (Nikkor-N 35mm f1.4 (pretty scarce) non-AI - $45, Vivitar Series-1 600mm f8 Solid CAT (rare - was about $600 in the late 1970's) - $35, Vivitar Series-1 28-90 f2.8-3.5 (Komura) and 70-210mm f3.5 (Tokina) together - $110, Jupiter-9 (Russian) 85mm f2 - $60, Sears and GAF (Tomioka - 1 for me, 1 for wife) 55mm f1.4 - $35 and $30, Komura 200mm f3.5 - $30 with another lens (rare Pentaflex Color 50mm f2.8) teleconverters, and cases, Soligor 350mm f5.6 $45, Nikkor-P 105mm f2.5 non-AI $55, Vivitar (Kiron) 28mm f2 - $30, Super-Takumar 35mm f3.5 - $7.50, Super-Takumar 200mm f4 - $7.50, Super-Takumar 50mm f1.8 and bellows - free, Micro-Nikkor 55mm f3.5 non-AI - $40, Vivitar Macro Focusing 2x (Kiron) makes 50mm 1:1 macro - (great 2x for macro or as normal 2x - I use it with the Nikkor-P 105mm and Micro-Nikkor 55mm), etc.) As much as I would love to own Canon L-series, I cannot afford them, but I have pro level glass for bargain basement prices. I do have some AF lenses, but most I use are MF as they are better glass than my AF lenses.

Well I have worked in the retail photo industry for over 30 years and this debate was around long before then. When I got into photography 30+ years ago Nikon was the clear winner in most all catagorys. Then Canon came out with it's L glass that I belive will hold it's own with any Nikkor Ed glass. I switched to Canon full time after the AF bodies started comming out. Nikon's AF system just was not able to keep up with Canons in speed. In my opinion this has been the case until maybe the last five years or so. Now Nikon has really came into it's own in the digital market and Gives Canon a good run for it's Money. I do like the D300. But I am commetted to Canon, I wll not trade off all my Glass to swtich to any other brand.

XTI was my choice for my first D-SLR and I don't regret it at all.
My next choice for an upgrade would be the Canon 40D.

Never had anything to do with Nikon, apart from picking one up and looking it over in the camera shop; it just didn't feel right, didn't feel comfortable when I was holding it.
Bought a Canon 400D about six months ago after having two FujiFinePix, a S5600 and then a S9600.
Very happy with the Canon, feel really comfortable using it.
I must say, the first thing I did, when I could afford it, was change the bundle lenses for some better quality ones, it definitely made a difference.
As so many people have already said though, it's the person behind the camera who makes the shot good or bad.

I often joke with my friends that use canons that nikons the best simply because I use one,and they argue back that canons are,but to be honest it doesn't bother me at all
they both have there pro's and cons.
what it comes down to is what your comfortable with,I am sure if 2 of the best photographers got together and one had a nikon and one had a cannon they would both get awesome results as its whats infront and behind the camera that is a huge part of the photo obviously..
they are just to huge companys and its always good to have competition,
If everyone used the same brand it would be slightly boring too
just stating the obvious really..

I have two cameras, my Nikon D80 and my Panasonic DMC FZ30. I will be getting the Nikon D300 next.
It's all in what you feel comfortable with and trust. There are some who can spend - and have spent - a carload of money in equipment they don't know how to use, and do not take the time to learn. There are others who can only afford a point and shoot who take the most amazing shots because of their love for photography and their wonderful artistic eye.

This shot was taken with the Panasonic
Good Morning Summer

This with the Nikon D80
Something about the rules of thirds... or was it threes? Gosh! I should have paid more attention

Same morning, just a few minutes apart. I love them both.

I use a Nikon 50 and I think that it is an amazing camera. Taking a great shot is down to the skill/creativity of the photographer not the type of camera you use!
