About American Bison Live!
This group pool is for photographs of American Bison only. American in this case equals North American as there are no South American bison.
GROUP RULES:
1. Photographs MUST be of living animals.
2. Please do not post photos of Asian/African buffalo or artwork of bison.
3. Members can post five (5) photos per day. This daily limit is intended only to provide an equitable time distribution of photos among members; all members are encouraged to post as many photos as possible over time.
At the risk of sounding elitist, Please do not post photos that are dark, out of focus, or otherwise of low quality. Heavily Photoshopped photos are not appropriate in this group. Such photos will be deleted without notice. If you have questions/concerns, please contact me.
Photos of American Bison tagged/labeled with the commonly used synonym, 'American Buffalo', and even 'buffalo' will be heartily accepted. In considering this synonymy question as part of developing this Flickr Group, I came to the conclusion that if we are to be tolerant of incorrect references to bison as buffalo, we must be just as tolerant of incorrect references to buffalo as bison. Uh Oh!!
Notwithstanding that conclusion, this group is about American Bison.
American bison include two subspecies: Plains Bison (Bison bison bison) and Wood Bison (Bison bison athabascae). Photos and information of both subspecies are welcome in this group. See this link for a nice comparison of the two subspecies
There is another species of the genus Bison, this is Bison bonsarus. This species occurs is known as European Bison or Wisent. There is now a Flickr group devoted to the Wisent: www.flickr.com/groups/473725@N23/ Check it out and do a Flickr search for 'wisent' to see this interesting animal.
The objective is to bring photos together which will tell the story of the bison in North America, their history, variation in the species, their living habits, their capabilities, their near extinction and comeback, their hardiness, and, not least, their beauty and the beauty of the surroundings in which they live.
Thorough tagging and descriptions of photos with location and other information is strongly encouraged.
Posts obviously must be on subject and conform with Flickr Community Guidelines: www.flickr.com/guidelines.gne
