About American Gods House
Evidence of less fashionable religions in unlikely locations.
Inspired by Neil Gaiman's book American Gods, in which the older, marginalized, not-very mainstream and often just terribly un-hip in the deity club, still have some sort of after-life in modern America, spiritual or otherwise. That really doesn't describe the book at all, it's just part of the premise. It's very good, and you should read it.
The very second set I ever started on flickr (in 2005) was based on this same theme. I've really done a good job of neglecting it, so now I'm setting loose this simple idea for the general flickr community to hopefully make something of.
Please stick to the concept. The novel is your best reference, but feel free to include myths, legends, gods, demigods, archetypes and concepts not included. Any images of the real life settings from the book are also allowed and very much encouraged.
Do not post images related to the rest of Mr. Gaiman's oeuvre, such as: members of the endless and their friends, goldfish (2), Black Orchid, Tori Amos, Amanda Palmer, Neil's very handsome dog, bees (unless they are some sort of ur-bee from mythology), terminally ill old filmmakers, Violins, the London Underground, Temple Gate, the pantheon of angels, Marvel superheroes in the 17th century, A ploughman's lunch, Douglas Adams, Duran Duran, eternals, celestials, deviants, Batman, etc. Absolutely no spoiler images from the Doctor Who script that he is not writing.
Please stick to images relating to actual gods and similar entities that were at one time worshiped or highly thought of on American soil. These images must be contemporary (since there's been photography, is a useful definition) photos of actual objects, existing now, or at some time, on any of the generally accepted American continents and outlying islands (Greenland OK). Photos or scans of other documentation of such things OK if proper description is provided and you have the legal right to do so.
DO NOT post any images from the big three big desert religions - christianity, judaism or islam. DO NOT post any images from the big Asian belief systems - Hindu, buddhist, daoist, etc. Please do not turn the group discussion into some sort of religious debate.
Meta-material relating to the actual American Gods book is also discouraged, e.g.: Photos of your dog-eared 1st printing of the paperback signed by the author, scans of book reviews, your awesome Wednesday and Shadow cosplay snapshots, shelf porn, grainy black and white shots of a spikey-haired Neil Gaiman aged 16 playing in a punk rock band (or otherwise), web cam shots of you enjoying the audio-book, etc.
Am I forgetting anything?
Share and Enjoy,
